SF Giants Rumors – Freddy Sanchez and New Manager in Fresno?

Posted on October 29th, 2009 by admin in SF Giants Rumors
Henry Schulman reports in the Giants Splash blog. That Bobby Evans just confirmed to him that Fresno manager Dan Rohn was not invited back after three seasons as Fresno’s manager.

Schulman thinks fast rising Double-A manager Steve Decker should be a top candidate to replace Rohn.

With the end of the World Series coming, Schulman says the first order of business for the Giants besides their search for a hitting coach, will be deciding whether to exercise Freddy Sanchez’s $8.1 million option or let him walk as a free agent. The Giants most likely want to renegotiate and give Sanchez a two-year deal.

SF Giants Rumors – Figgins, Holliday, Bay

Posted on October 27th, 2009 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

Chris Haft of MLB.com answers some fans questions. When asked if he see’s the Giants going after Chone Figgins. Haft said if they’re not considering Figgins, they should. Figgins, whose 101 walks and .395 on-base percentage this year for the Angels were career highs, would complement the free swingers in the Giants lineup. He’ll be 32 next Opening Day, so he conceivably has a few years left at peak effectiveness. And he earned “only” $5.78 million this season, suggesting that he’ll be affordable even with a pay increase.

Haft was also asked if it boild down to it, who would be a better fit for the Giants, Matt Holliday or Jason Bay? Haft said Bay’s defense gives him a slight edge. He’s considered only average with the glove, but that’s better than Holliday. At the plate, Holliday’s more productive, but not by much. His 162-game average is .318, with a .387 on-base percentage, a .545 slugging percentage, 29 home runs and 112 RBI’s. Bay’s corresponding numbers are .280, .376, .519, 33 and 107.

Lincecum Top NL Pitcher

Posted on October 21st, 2009 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

Chris Haft of the MLB.com reports that Tim Lincecum was named top NL pitcher by TSN.

Lincecum posted a 15-7 record this year, a slight dip from his 18-5 finish in 2008, when he captured the NL Cy Young Award. But the panel of 31 Major League general managers and assistant GMs who cast ballots for the TSN honor were among the observers who looked beyond the 25-year-old’s wins and losses.

“In a lot of ways, he was actually better,” Giants pitching coach Dave Righetti said.

Lincecum trimmed his ERA from 2.62 to 2.48. Opponents hit .206 off him this season, compared to .221 in ‘08. After walking 84 in 227 innings a year ago, he improved to 68 walks in 225 1/3 frames this season.

SF Giants Rumors – Lincecum’s Arbitration

Posted on October 21st, 2009 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle posts on the Giants Splash blog. Tim Lincecum made his major-league debut on May 6, 2007 on national TV against the Phillies. Had the date been May 14, the Giants would have saved millions.

The cut off to be eligible for arbitration is two years and 141 days of service. Lincecum has 2 years and 148 days. Which means he past the cut off and now is arbitration-eligible. Had Lincecum fallen short of arbitration, the Giants could have renewed his contract themselves.

As Brian Sabean correctly suggested, the union probably will discourage any such talks. Because Lincecum won a Cy Young so early in his career, his arbitration case would set a substantial record for a Super Two pitcher’s salary even if he loses the case. That’s why the union loves arbitration.
