SF Giants Rumors – Trading Deadline Less Than 24HRs

Posted on July 30th, 2010 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

  Jose Guillen 6 Royals

Mychael Urban of CSNBayArea.com says (via twitter) the Giants are working hard on a deal at this hour. That was around 9:30pm Pacific time last night. Nothing has come of that tweet yet, but I’m sure they got the ball rolling with a potential trade.

Scott Miller of CBSSports.com says the Giants have shown interest in Toronto Blue Jays reliever Scott Downs, and the Washington Nationals slugger Adam Dunn. Dunn talks aren’t to serious yet, as the Nationals are hoping to sign him to an extension.

Miller also says Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Jim Edmonds would make sense for the Giants since they are looking for an outfielder who can improve the offense. I would say the Giants will have to pass on that suggestion. If were not adding a bat with some power. We are fine the way we are now.

Giants President Larry Baer was on KNBR last night and said it’s less than a 50% chance that they will make a deal by the trading deadline. I’m sure that was just said, so fans won’t get over excited in case only a minor trade is made (no power bat).

Mike Krukow was on KNBR this morning and said he would love to see the Giants add to the team, but would hate to see them lose some prospects.

The Giants might be starting to feel a little pressure after the Dodgers added Scott Podsednik and the Padres adding Miguel Tejada. I think the Giants will be adding a reliever and probably Jose Guillen.

SF Giants Rumors – Players Still On The Radar

Posted on July 29th, 2010 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

  Scott Downs

The San Francisco Giants are still interested in the Toronto Blue Jays reliever Scott Downs, but the Blue Jays have a high asking price. Which tells me this deal isn’t likely for the Giants. Another reliever they are looking at is the Seattle Mariners reliever Brandon League.

With Scott Podsednik being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Now Giants GM Brian Sabean can scratch him off the list and focus on bringing someone over with some power. Jose Guillen is still in play for the Giants if they go the rent-a-player route.

I was going to add Jorge Cantu as well, but word on the street is the Texas Rangers are close to making a deal with the Florida Marlins for Cantu.

Below are the stats for Downs, League and Guillen.

Scott Downs – 47 G, 4 W, 5 L, 2.33 ERA, 42 IP

Brandon League – 47 G, 8 W, 6 L, 3.39 ERA, 53 IP

Jose Guillen – 99 G, .271 AVG, 16 HR, 45 R, 60 RBI’s

Buster Posey Update – Hit streak ends at 21 games. That’s good enough for 2nd place behind Willie McCovey for longest hit streak by a Giants rookie.

SF Giants Rumors – Hart, Fielder, Dunn, Lee, Cantu, etc.

Posted on July 28th, 2010 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

  DerrekLee

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle says a major league source said conversations with the Brewers about Corey Hart and Prince Fielder, were “dead in the water.”

The San Francisco Giants have asked the Nationals about Adam Dunn, but they would want Madison Bumgarner in return. Now that would make no sense to lose an up and coming star in Bumgarner for a rental in Dunn. I guess that means we can cross Dunn off the list for now.

Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times says Derrek Lee has been linked to the Rangers and Angels, but the Giants could be next in line after talks with the Brewers on Fielder have broke down.

I asked Chris Haft the Giants beat writer what he thought the Giants chances of landing Hart, Jose Bautista, Scott Podsednik, or rental players like Dunn, Jorge Cantu or Jose Guillen. Haft said he thinks they could have any of these guys right now if they wanted. It’s just a matter of whether they think the cost is worth it. The later they wait, the less they’ll have to give up (of course, then they run the risk of another team grabbing one of these guys).

SF Giants Rumors – Names Still Swirling By The Bay

Posted on July 27th, 2010 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

Corey Hart Brewers
It’s been reported by Jon Heyman of SI.com (via twitter) that if the San Francisco Giants can’t swing a deal for Milwaukee Brewers Corey Hart or Toronto Blue Jays Jose Bautista the Giants may want to consider renting a player such as Jose Guillen.

Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star said (via twitter) that the Giants are showing interest in Kansas City Royals Scott Podsednik. Podsednik isn’t the power bat that the Giants are looking for, so I really don’t see this deal happening. Bob has told me (via email) that the Giants have been linked to both Podsednik and Guillen and he knows the Royals are willing to move both players. He also says it won’t take much for the Giants to land Guillen.

It’s also been reported that the Giants are still in on Jorge Cantu. Cantu is a free agent after this year, so he does fall into the rental player category. Sabean says that’s what he doesn’t want to do, but if he gets desperate I’m sure he will take a rental player. He knows his job is still on the line.

I have been receiving a lot of emails/comments from fans that want the Giants to pull the trigger on the Hart/Sanchez deal with the Brewers. I look forward to receiving more emails/comments from fans as to which move they would like to see done before the trading deadline.

SF Giants Rumors – Sabean’s List Narrows Down

Posted on July 23rd, 2010 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

  brian_sabean_phone

The San Francisco Giants GM Brian Sabean was on with the Razor & Mr. T. Sabean said they would like to get someone who’s more than a rental player. The Giants are looking for someone that they won’t have to give away the farm for either. Sabean says a player that has something left on his contract or is arbitration eligible.

Sabean continues to say if they can find a bat they would like a left handed hitter. The Giants aren’t looking to trade starting pitching. He’s hoping to be able to make a deal using minor league prospects.

Which tells me the Giants are more than likely going to pass on Corey Hart (right-handed bat), Jose Guillen (rental/right-handed bat) and  Adam Dunn (rental). They might still be in play for Prince Fielder, but I can’t see that deal happening without starting pitching being part of the deal. As we all know everything is speculation, but I’m pretty sure Sabean has something up his sleeve to make a trade before the trading deadline. His Giants GM life depends on it!

SF Giants Rumors – D-Train In Hart Next?

Posted on July 15th, 2010 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

  Dontrelle Willis Detroit Tigers

The San Francisco Giants signed the D-Train Dontrelle Willis to a minor league contract. Willis will be reporting to the Fresno Grizzlies on Monday. This is a low risk high reward signing for the Giants. Just like the Pat Burrell signing.

This tells me that Giants GM Brian Sabean is getting serious about trading LHP Jonathan Sanchez for a bat. The Milwaukee Brewers want Sanchez or Madison Bumgarner for Corey Hart. I’m not saying this will be the trade, but this is the rumor that isn’t dying.

Stay tuned Giants fans!

Giants Move Up In Most/Least Efficient Teams

Posted on July 14th, 2010 by admin in King of Cali Blog

  Bill Neukom

Patrick Rishe has done it again! He previously wrote an article about the worst franchises in pro sports. The San Francisco Giants were listed in the top 3 of worst MLB Franchises. That was using data from the last 5 years. Read about the “Top 3 Inefficient Franchises in the MLB”.   This time Patrick is using a similar methodology, efficiency assessments were made for the first half of the 2010 MLB season. Not every team is listed in his article, but he did tell me (via email) that the Giants are not in the bottom 3 of least efficient teams this year.   Patrick said so far this year, the story is a vast improvement. The Giants are the 18 most efficient or 12th least efficient. Not great, but in a relatively terms, a huge improvement.   ~King of Cali
