After winning the World Series three times in the space of five years at the beginning of the decade, the San Francisco Giants have quickly matured into one of the most successful modern-day franchises in Major League Baseball.
Unfortunately, it just wasn’t meant to be for Bruce Bochy’s men this year as the Giants lost to eventual champions, the Chicago Cubs in the first round of the postseason. However, San Francisco look well placed to avenge that defeat next time as they look to get their hands on a ninth World Series title.
With four elite closers available in free agency during the offseason, the Giants should go all-in to acquire one of MLB’s biggest stars. Cubs hero Aroldis Chapman, Kenley Jansen of the NL West champions Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Nationals star Mark Melancon are all available for the right price.

In truth, this Giants side isn’t as good as it was in 2010 but Bochy has still got this franchise ready to win now – and that is why San Francisco should do everything in their power to sign one of these closers. In 2016, the Giants bullpen fell short as 32 blown saves cost San Francisco dearly in their pursuit of the ultimate crown in baseball. And if Bochy gets his own way, they won’t be making that mistake again…
With a handful of ‘lesser’ players leaving, San Francisco are set to save $46.4 million – which should free up space for an elite name; the Giants bullpen is certainly going to look different at the beginning of next season.
It could be argued that the National League West is the most competitive division in baseball and the Giants need an elite signing to keep pace with the Dodgers at the top. If they somehow manage to snag Jansen, it really would aid their title aspirations ahead of what could be a memorable campaign for San Francisco fans.
They aren’t going to run away with it but San Francisco’s blueprint is as effective for success as it gets. The Giants have an experienced, smart coach in Bruce Bochy and a couple of signings here and there will almost certainly see San Francisco competing at the business end of the campaign.
It would be foolish to claim that they will topple the Cubs on their way to a ninth title but they have as good a chance as anyone of beating the defending champions.
