I also do not want any long term signings as
these have bitten the Giants too many times{Rowand & Zito} three years max on a contract…too many things can happen in those years beyond three…load up the incentatives and make them feel wanted.

I’d like to see Pill and Belt make the team out of spring training. I think Belt needs at least 300 at bats this year to get comfortable and settle in at the big league level. He can play 1B and OF. Pill appears a little more posied and seasoned than Belt at the moment, but Belt’s ceiling seems higher. Both should push Huff to the bench, if Huff falters like last year.

As for Cain, love the fact he is a homegrown talent that was developed by the Giants. Hope he is with the team his entire career. But, because of the stress pitching puts on forearms, shoulders, and elbows and the prevalence for injuries by pitchers, I generally would never give a pitcher more than a 4 year deal. I’d be willing to overpay somewhat on a short term deal, to avoid the risks inherent in long term deals. Plus, complacency, even if unintended, often accompanies long term deals. That is why I like the Lincecum deal. Good for Lincecum, and good for the Giants.

I agree Crawford should be given an extended look at shortstop, even if he struggles at the plate. A .225 average is acceptable, provided the rest of the lineup hits to their capabilities. His glove is critical to solidying the infield defense.

As for Theriot, I like the insurance he provides. A veteran who can hit for average, though with little to no power. Theriot makes Fontenot expendable. In fact, it’s not clear to me why the Giants signed Fontenot, because his glove is not adequate to play SS on an extended basis if Crawford struggles, and he doesn’t hit as well as Keppinger who the Giants opted not to keep. Given Sanchez’ injury history, I thought it would have made more sense to keep Keppinger, and then sign a veteran SS who could play 80 games if Crawford struggles or gets hurt. Fontenot was never gonna be that guy; Theriot could be. Perhaps Keepinger would have cost too much $$$. Oh well, water under the bridge. Time to move on.

I am pulling for Cain as always. He is a workhorse!!! Pill showed great promise in his limited play last year. The question is do we have room to play him? He is a first baseman and we have plenty. We have Huff who could surprize us and Belt and Posey. We just have too many first baseman types. I would love him to kick ass in Spring training and force the Giants to lay him. Let the fittest survive!!!

This isn’t a surprise. Even though Cain is a southern boy and has had some hard luck with the Giants, I think he truly enjoys this team, and the city. And as a long time Giants’ fan, I sure hope Pill can duplicate what he’s been doing in the minors. He’s got serious pop. Giants announcer Mike Krukow thinks Pill is more ready than Brandon Belt.

I don’t think 2011 was a fluke for the giants. I think they will prove it this season. We will have to watch and see what unfolds, baseball is a long season.

I am looking forward to meeting Vogelsong tomorrow night in San Jose. He had a great 2011 and I am pulling for him to do it again in 2012. It is hard to believe the Giants drafted him in June of 1998 and his first pitch was for the Giants in 9/2/2000.

We are going to need to have some luck to have enough offense for Vogey and the other pitchers. On paper, our offense is not even average major league talent. We will need some good fortune and I am pulling for the Giants. I am hoping PANDA is going to feed me some HR’s in McCovey Cove!!

Are the Giants telling us we couldn’t get Beltran for what the Cards paid? Sheesh and we gave up Wheeler for him too! What a waste!

Getting Posey and Sanchez will be big but we still need that big bopper. Can anyone say Tater? I knew you could

The scouts will be more prepared for him this year so it will be tougher but he will have to make the adjustments.
