SF Giants Rumors: Tim Lincecum Feeling Pressure, Sports Bar Angel Shares Thoughts!

The San Francisco Giants had a good chance to sweep the 2-game series with the Colorado Rockies, but weren’t able to get the win on Tim Lincecum day. It’s only the 3rd time the Rockies have beat the Giants in their last 13 contests.

Lincecum did toss 7 innings with 7 strikeouts, but he also gave up 4 runs. I did see some flashes of the Lincecum of old. However, it wasn’t enough to get the Giants the win Tuesday night.

I’m not giving up on “The Freak“, and there’s a lot of Giants fans who are still keeping the faith. I believe he’s going to come around, and it’s just a matter of time before we get the Cy Young Timmy back. I’m just wondering if it’s the pressure of turning down the five-year, $100 million contract that the Giants offered him.

Lincecum has made 8 starts this year and has a 2-3 record with a 5.77 ERA. I’m not concerned with his personal win/loss record. It’s the ERA, and the team not winning more games the day he starts.

The San Francisco Giants should start looking into the possibility of trading Tim Lincecum before he becomes a free agent in 2014. Lincecum is due $22 million dollars in 2013 and will demand even more than the $20 million a year given to Matt Cain. I believe the money will be better spent on fulfilling the many positions that need upgrades and signing important players who are Arbitration eligible for the 2013 season. Below are the Arbitration eligible players who may get big raises and the positions that need upgrading.

Arbitration Eligible: Buster Posey, Santiago Casilla (Will Brian Wilson be back?), Sergio Romo and some other key players.

1B: Brandon Belt may not be the answer. This position needs huge power upgrade (good candidate for a trade).

2B: Freddy Sanchez is done.

SS: Brandon Crawford does not hit enough and he is making too many errors.

OF: Other than Melky Cabrera (who is a free agent in 2013). Outfield needs upgrade. Gary Brown will be a starter in 2013. If Giants don’t sign Melky then two OF positions need major upgrades in 2013.

I do not have faith in the position players who are in AAA-Fresno. I see the Giants looking into free agency for most of the positions noted above (other than Brown). Even with losing Lincecum, I believe the Giants can be successful with a pitching rotation led by Cain, Madison Bumgarner and Ryan Vogelsong. Upgrade the positions above and sign the important Arbitration eligible players.

Last night was a great win for the San Francisco Giants. It’s a sweet way to start a 7-game homestand. I wish I could say Ryan Vogelsong was the winning pitcher, but he wasn’t. Vogelsong tossed seven innings and allowed just one run.

For those of you keeping track of the run support Vogelsong is getting. It’s not much at all… He’s only received nine runs of support over his last six starts. I’m sure he’s just happy the team got the win, but at some point the team needs to get him some “W’s” for his outstanding performances.

Big Fly

Outfielder Gregor Blanco showed that he also has some pop with the bat. Blanco hit his first homer of the season last night for the Giants.

Shutdown Reliever

This man isn’t the closer, but he’s a shutdown reliever! Sergio Romo is currently 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA. He hasn’t allowed a run this season. Romo is 1-of-5 Major League pitchers that hasn’t allowed a run this season.

Hit Streak Ends

Melky Cabrera failed to get a hit last night to snap his 11-game hit streak. Cabrera was hitting .468 during his streak. Who’s starting to think the Giants may have got the better end of the Jonathan Sanchez and Cabrera trade?

Sellout Streak

Last night was the 100th consecutive sellout for the Giants at AT&T Park.

SF Giants Rumors: Roster Moves, Nice Weekend In AZ, Melky’s Hot Bat

The San Francisco Giants sent infielder Conor Gillaspie back to Fresno and called up infielder Charlie Culberson.

Culberson made his major league debut yesterday (Sunday), and also managed to get his first major league hit. It was a great moment to see his father fight back the tears, and his mother looking so proud on Mother’s Day!

The Giants made another roster move this weekend by activating relief pitcher Jeremy Affeldt from the 15-day DL. The counter move was to designate pitcher Travis Blackley for assignment to make room for Affeldt on the roster.

Bad Start, Great Finish

Friday night in Arizona wasn’t a great start to the 3-game set with the D-Backs. The Giants lost game 1 on Friday night, but managed to get the next 2 games to win the series. The G-men are 17-17, and currently 6 games back of the hated Dodgers in the NL West.

Hot Bat

Outfielder Melky Cabrera is swinging a hot bat for the Giants. He had a 4 hit game yesterday and is currently hitting .348 for the Gigantes. Let’s break his average down even more… From the left side Cabrera is hitting .304, and .462 (right-handed) off left-handed pitching!

Should we officially start the collection fund, so the Giants can re-sign Melky?

SF Giants Rumors: Struggling Lincecum, 3rd Base Option

The San Francisco Giants went into Los Angeles and managed to finally beat the Dodgers ace, Clayton Kershaw. However, the G-Men still dropped 2-out-of-3 to lose the series.

Although he’s showing signs that he’s back, Tim Lincecum hasn’t put it all together yet. Most Giants fans on SF Giants Rumors Facebook page don’t seem to be to worried about it, and think Timmy will come around. The struggling Lincecum is 2-3 with a 5.89 ERA. Let’s not hit the panic button just yet. It’s May 10th, and the season goes till September for those of you that may have forgot.

3rd Base Option

Freddy Sanchez is still on the DL, but has been playing 3rd base in extended spring training. Which means the Giants are looking to Sanchez to take over the 3rd base job when he comes off the DL, till Pablo Sandoval returns.

SF Giants Rumors: Kevin Youkilis On The Giants Radar?

Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com says the Red Sox should trade Kevin Youkilis to make way for a top prospect, Will Middlebrooks. Youkilis is scheduled to come off the 15-day DL on Monday. The Red Sox can trade Youkilis, send their top prospect back down to AAA, or move the prospect to the outfield where he has never played.

With the trade rumors starting to swirl around Youkilis, and he’s a corner infielder. If you’re Brian Sabean do you make a call and look to pull the trigger to bring Youkilis in to play 3rd base?

The Red Sox might be willing to eat a good portion of his $12 million contract, but they might want a good young pitcher in return. This would be a rent-a-player scenario, unless the Giants use the club option and bring him back for $13 million in 2013.

Let me add that he’s only hitting .219 with 2 homers and 9 RBI in 18 games for the Red Sox.

SF Giants Rumors: Sneak Past Kershaw, Lopez On Point, Injury Bug, Rubber Match

The San Francisco Giants did something last night that they haven’t done since August 1, 2010. They beat the Dodgers ace, Clayton Kershaw. Kershaw had a lifetime record of 6-1 against the Giants with a 1.25 ERA in 12 games prior to last night’s showdown.

It took a 2-run homer off the bat of Brett Pill and a great outing by Ryan Vogelsong to sneak by the Dodgers ace.

Lopez On Point

Giants reliever Javier Lopez came in the game with 1 out and the bases loaded to face Andre Ethier in the bottom of the eighth inning. Lopez looked really sharp, and got Ethier to ground into an inning ending double play!

Injury Bug

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle says outfielder Angel Pagan‘s injury isn’t serious. Pagan left the game with a leg injury, and it appears to just be a cramp in his left hamstring.

“I think he’s going to be fine,” Bruce Bochy said. “He felt it a little earlier in the game. I’m leaning towards giving him a day off tomorrow.”

Rubber Match

The rubber match of the series is tonight. Tim Lincecum (2-2, 5.68 ERA) for the Giants, and Chad Billingsley (2-2, 3.19 ERA) for the Dodgers. Both starters are looking to shut the door and secure the series win for their teams.

SF Giants Rumors: Mota Suspension, Huff Is Back, Snapped Hit Streak, Next Two In LA

The San Francisco Giants lose long-relief man Guillermo Mota to a 100-game suspension. Mota has tested positive for Clenbuterol, but swears it was children’s cough medicine. Mota’s agent Adam Katz has said they will appeal the suspension.

If you’re wondering why he’s suspended so many games, it’s because Mota was suspended on November 1, 2006 for using performance-enhancing drugs. That was a 50-game suspension.

Huff Is Back

The Giants needed to make a move to activate Aubrey Huff, and the Mota suspension fixed that problem. Huff took Mota’s roster spot. He’s is returning from a 15-day DL trip due to anxiety.

Snapped Hit Streak

Angel Pagan had his 20-game hitting streak snapped last night. It was an 0-for-5 night for Pagan, against the Dodgers. The good news is it’s still early in the season, so Pagan can start a new one tonight!

The San Francisco Giants were able to salvage the home-stand by winning 2-out-3 from the Brewers. Yesterday was the living legend’s (Willie Mays) birthday. It was a great game to be in attendance and sing happy birthday to the man that once scored from first base on a base hit to left field, with no error on the play!

Hit Streak

Angel Pagan has a career high 20-game hitting streak that’s on the line tonight in Los Angeles. Pagan is hitting .315 with 3 doubles, 3 triples, 4 homers and 7 RBI during the streak. Pablo Sandoval and Pagan are the first players in San Francisco’s history (SF era) to both (teammates) have hit safely in 20-consecutive games in the same season. There’s still plenty of time for Buster Posey and Melky Cabrera to put a streak together!

Projecting The Series

Scott Willis of The Crazy Crabbers has projected the Giants vs. Dodgers series. He says the Giants have a 38% chance to win this 3-game set with the Dodgers. Let’s just take it one game at a time, and see how the chips fall… BEAT LA, BEAT LA!!

It’s been a few days since the last post on SF Giants Rumors. A lot has changed since then as well.

The San Francisco Giants have managed to get swept by the Marlins, and Pablo Sandoval is now on the DL with a broken hamate bone. This is the 2nd time Sandoval has broken his hamate bone in the last 2 seasons. Last year he was sidelined for 6 weeks with this injury on the opposite hand.

Let’s hope this year he can come back a little quicker since it’s not his throwing hand this time around.

Called Up

The Giants have called up infielder Conor Gillaspie to take the 3rd base job and hopefully run with it in Sandoval’s absence.

DL Stint

Aubrey Huff is eligible to come off the DL on Monday (May 7). He was placed on the 15-day DL with an anxiety disorder.

Hitting Streak

Outfielder Angel Pagan is still in the midst of a 17 game hitting streak, and looks to keep that alive tonight against the Brewers at AT&T Park. Pagan is hitting .299 during this streak.

This guy may not have a long hit streak going, but Melky Cabrera is the only Giants player to have started every game this season. Cabrera has also managed to reach base safely (walk or hit) in 23 of the 25 games.

SF Giants Rumors: Winning Ways At Home, Pagan Hit Streak, 2-3-4 Hitters

The San Francisco Giants won the 3-game series with the Padres, and have won all 3 of their home series so far at AT&T Park. They look to keep things rolling as Ozzie Guillen and the new look Marlins come to town (Tuesday).

Hit Streak

Everyone has heard that Pablo Sandoval‘s hitting streak came to an end, but that wasn’t the only hitting streak that was in jeopardy for the Giants.

Outfielder Angel Pagan has a 14 game hit streak going and that’s now the longest current hit streak in the National League. Pagan started off the season very cold with the bat, so now that he’s been hitting on a consistent basis, his average (.250) has been picking back up.

2-3-4 in April

It was a very nice April for the G-men’s 2-3-4 hitters in the lineup. They’re a big factor in the Giants ability to score more runs this year.
