Left Field Production Has Giants Fans Ready for Melvin Upton Jr.

Melvin Upton Jr.

The San Francisco Giants are off to a rough start thus far. I don’t think they’re hitting the panic button yet, but they were quick to sign recently released outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. to a minor league deal. The Giants are already feeling the non-productive left field spot in the lineup.

Upton Jr. is a good signing, because he’s still got a lot of pop in that bat and speed in those legs. However, Upton Jr. only hit .230 in 2016, but he he did have 20 homers and 27 stolen bases.

The 32 year old, still has gas left in the tank. He’ll just have to prove in AAA Sacramento that he can work on that .230 average, so he can make it back to the big leagues and start making an impact for the Giants in the NL West Divsion race. You can view all MLB betting here at William Hill.

Upton is a career .243 hitter so at .230 average isn’t that much of a difference, and I would take a chance on Upton. His power and speed makes him a threat anytime he steps into that batters-box. That’s what the Giants desperately need right now in left field where they’re currently getting no production.

Only time will tell if Upton actually gets the call and puts on the Giants big league uniform.

Left Field Struggles

Jarrett Parker is getting his chance to show he belongs in the big leagues. However, he’s not seizing the moment as of yet. He’s currently hitting .071 (1 hit in 14 AB), which is pretty much no production coming from left field. Parker’s platoon partner Chris Marrero hasn’t done anything either to put the Giants at ease with left field. Marrero is hitting .059 (1 hit in 17 AB), and hasn’t been able to transition his spring training bat into the young season.

If the Giants would have a better record right now, they probably wouldn’t be to worried and give these guys time to fight out of their funks. However, they’re off to a bad start in the NL West and already find themselves looking up at the San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers, Colorado Rockies and the Arizona Diamondbacks!

NL West Standings 4-12-17

I think most fans are ready to give Upton a shot and see what he can do. Can it really get much worse?

The Giants might have been smart to sign Upton.
