SF Giants Rumors: Russ Springer Regrets Hitting Barry Bonds

Posted on August 20th, 2013 by admin in SF Giants Rumors
Barry-Bonds-Hands-UpBob Nightengale of USA Today Sports says former Houston Astros reliever Russ Springer admitted that he intentionally hit San Francisco Giants star Barry Bonds while he immersed in a steroid scandal while attempting to break Hank Aaron‘s Home Run Record in 2006.

It was in the top of the 5th inning when Springer felt the need to use the baseball as a weapon and throw at Bonds. I’m sure there was a lot of built up frustration during that game as well. The Giants had an 11-3 lead at that point in the game when Springer hit Bonds.

The pitch sequence in that Springer vs. Bonds at bat:

Ball 1 – Slider that skipped two feet behind Bonds (Springer and Astros manager get warnings)
Ball 2 – Slider that nearly drilled Bonds in the knees
Foul Ball – Fastball that came in tight and Bonds tried to get out of the way and the ball nicked the knob of the bat for a foul ball.
Hit By Pitch – Fastball (93 MPH) that drilled Bonds in the upper back.

Springer said, “I don’t lose sleep over it,” but does regret hitting Bonds.

“I wasn’t proud of it then,” Springer said, “and I’m not proud of it now. If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn’t do it. I wouldn’t hit him.”

  1. HELL SPRINGER I WOULD HAVE HIT HIM TOO !! WHY WOULD A MAN WITH ALL THOSE SUPER TALENTS EVEN ASSOCIATE WITH THOSE LOW LIFES WAS BEYOND ME.
A MAN WITH THAT KIND OF EYE CONTACT DOES NOT NEED THAT CRAP….NUFF SAID

  2. When Barry was hot everyone loved and believed him. I thought a guy could get that big just by working out.
Now I’ve been educated through this fiasco and realize it’s not possible without chemical help.
When everyone hated him I was mad; I was mad at ESPN for propagating the lies because they had it in for Barry.
I thought their hatred was jealousy.
But when Barry passed McCovey I started realizing something was wrong.
When Barry blew past Mays I knew he was not half the hitter Mays was and resented it.
When Barry destroyed Aaron’s record that Hank had earned honestly forever corrupting the record books I now see clearly why everyone was so down on Bonds.
When McGwire and Sosa did it the only thing they destroyed was the single season home run record that already had problems with the asterisk for Maris.
    Bonds destruction was greater.
Statistics are as much about baseball as anything else.
Without accurate ways to measure one generation to another it’s creating a Baseball ethos vacuum.
Almost schizophrenic to future generations that aren’t going to know what to think or how to judge.
