SF Giants Daily – Sanchez, Posey, Cain, Sandoval, Bumgarner

Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News said on his blog, for two guys who don’t have contracts beyond Oct. 31st, they (Bochy & Sabean) did a lot of talking about next season.

Freddy Sanchez clearly is coming back. Sabean mentioned he’d like to restructure the contract, but that the club has every expectation he’ll be the second baseman.

They’ll watch Buster Posey in the Fall League, and while they think he’s ready defensively, they wonder if he’ll be prepared to carry the offensive load to be the everyday catcher next season. Sabean said. I’d expect Bengie Molina’s return to be less than a 50/50 proposition, though.

Madison Bumgarner almost certainly won’t be a candidate to open the season in next year’s rotation. Sabean wouldn’t completely rule out the possibility.

It doesn’t seem likely that Brad Penny will return in 2010. They have other more pressing needs for their available dollars, Sabean said.

On the possibility of trading a pitcher for a bat, Sabean said they would “agonize” over it. He wouldn’t put a blanket no-trade on Matt Cain – but said it’s almost impossible to get fair value back when you trade a pitcher for a position player.

Pablo Sandoval was invited to play for a traveling MLB All-Star team in Korea and hadn’t decided what to do. He’ll play for Magallanes in Vanezuela for a three-week period. This could delay his Panda Weight loss/conditioning camp he was supposed to begin the first week of November.
