Yesterday the San Francisco Giants were close to inking pitcher Ted Lilly to a minor league deal. The deal was then called off after the Giants reviewed Lilly’s medical record. I’m not really sure what the thought process was of wanting to bring Lilly in this late in the season. I would rather see our young arms in the farm system get more innings. Plus, Ryan Vogelsong will be activated Friday and will be inserted back into the Giants starting rotation. He will start Friday night at AT&T Park against the Orioles.
The man that recently lost his role in the starting rotation received the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award. Yes, I was talking about Barry Zito. The award is an annual award, which goes to one major league player who best exemplifies the giving character. Zito started “Strike Out For Troops” in April 2005. It’s to support our injured American service members and their families at a critical time in their lives.
Outfielder Angel Pagan is expected to be back with the Giants on September 1st. He’s been limited to only 46 games this year due to his torn hamstring injury. Pagan was hitting .262 with 30 runs scored prior to going down with his injury. Giants fans will love to have him back in the leadoff role, so manager Bruce Bochy will no longer have to draw the leadoff hitters name out of his hat.
