The 2013 isn’t officially over yet, but a lot of San Francisco Giants fans have already started looking ahead to the 2014 season. Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle says Brandon Belt is okay with moving to left field if it helps the team. We all know Belt is a great first baseman and could even be a possible gold glove award winner. However, the Giants are looking to move him to left field to make room for a bat. Which means that bat might have to come at the first base position.
Manager Bruce Bochy said the Giants are looking for a power bat, “somebody who can drive the ball.”
With power bats thin in left field, the Giants might have to find that bat at the first base position. This is why Belt is going to work on his outfield skills.
Potential Free Agent Outfielders
Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com says one rival executive expects the Giants to make a play for Cuban free agent first baseman Jose Abreu or second baseman Alexander Guerrero. Abreu has raw power and can provide a huge thump in the Giants lineup since he’s a middle of the order type hitter. Guerrero is also known as an offensive second baseman, which means you can expect some production from his position as well.
Infielder Marco Scutaro is done for the year. He’s going to have surgery Friday to insert a pin in his mallet finger to straighten his finger out. With Scutaro’s back issues and finger injury. These are signs that the aging second baseman isn’t as durable as he once was. Which means the Giants could be really considering Cuban second baseman Guerrero.
The contract that most Giants fans thought would never end is finally coming to an end. Yes, I’m talking about the Barry Zito contract. It’s sad to see it end the way it has, but I’m glad that the Giants gave him a farewell start last night against the hated Los Angeles Dodgers. Sure glad to see him end the contract with a win! Just wish he could have got a chance to get a standing ovation, but Bochy pinch hit for him instead of pulling him out from the pitching mound.
Tim Lincecum takes the mound tonight in what could be his last start as a Giant. Timmy hits the free agent market following the season. Let’s hope this isn’t his last game in the Orange & Black!
