SF Giants Rumors: Buster Posey Mega Deal Talks, Ryan Theriot Could Hang up Spikes, Chone Figgins An Option
Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com says the San Francisco Giants and Buster Posey have quietly begun talks about a possible Mega-Deal. Heyman points out that Posey would like a 10-year deal, and it’s not unreasonable since Posey is only 25, and would be 35 when the contract would end.
It could be a big risk to give a catcher a long deal, but Posey isn’t just a catcher. He can flat out hit, he’s won NL Rookie of the Year, NL MVP, NL Comeback Player of the Year, NL Hank Aaron Award, MLB Batting Title, Silver Slugger Award and two World Series Championships! Yes, he’s done all this in just three years, and the 2nd year was the year he was out with his horrific injury. Did I also mention that he can play first base too? This is another way of resting him as a catcher, and keeping him fresh.
“Posey is a once-in-a-generation type player,” says Heyman.
Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle says free agent infielder Ryan Theriot has had teams calling, but he doesn’t want to be anybody’s backup. He’s looking for significant playing time, or he’s ready to hang up his spikes and be a full time father, husband, and possibly a player agent.
“I’ve had some stuff come up, no doubt. It’s not really exactly what I’m looking for playing-time-wise. That’s where we’re at right now. We’ll see what happens,” says Theriot.
Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com says (via Twitter) he hears the Giants are not enamored with infielder Chone Figgins for a possible bench role. Figgins was the most desirable third baseman during the 2009 free agency market. Four years later, he’s trying to find a team to pick him up…
