The deal is finally official… The San Francisco Giants have officially signed reliever Javier Lopez to a three year deal, worth $13 million. In a counter move, the Giants waived reliever Jose Mijares to make room on the 40-man roster for Lopez. Mijares has cleared waivers and has elected free agency.
Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle says Lopez gave serious thought about accepting an offer from the Washington Nationals. Lopez was born and raised near Washington.
“I was getting a lot of influence from family and friends to get back to the D.C. area so it would be easier for them to see me,” Lopez said. “Obviously it was something that was talked about and discussed, not only with my family but friends in the area and my agent as well, to gauge if that was the place for me to play.”
“I always wanted to play for my hometown team. This was the closest I ever got, but I want to finish as a Giant and I felt this was a better place for me at this time,” said Lopez.
