Buster Olney of ESPN.com says (via Twitter) the San Francisco Giants dodged a bullet! At the time outfielder Melky Cabrera was suspended, he was in talks with the Giants about an extension worth something in the range of $75-$85 million.
Cabrera was a big reason the Giants were in the position they were till he got busted for PED’s. He was very fun to watch and was putting on a hitting clinic. However, it remains a mystery as to how well he will do post PED’s. I’m just glad the Giants didn’t give him that kind of money, because he could come crashing down to earth this year. Only time will tell if this Melk is spoiled or not!
In another Olney tweet, he says Buster Posey and the Giants are not close to an extension. If one develops, then the best comparable contract is probably the Joey Votto deal. That’s a 12-year commitment, and not a 3-year deal.
In a 3-year span, Posey has already won Rookie of the Year, Batting Title, Silver Slugger Award, Hank Aaron Award, Comeback Player of the Year, MVP, and contributed to winning two World Series Championships. If any Giants player was going to get a ridiculous type contract, it would have to be Posey!
Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com (via Twitter) reports that reliever Jose Mijares (elbow impingement) said he felt good after throwing on flat ground. It’s still not clear as to when he will start throwing off a mound again.
