SF Giants Rumors – Garko Out, Atkins In?

Posted on December 14th, 2009 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune says if the Giants don’t trade for Dan Uggla. They could sign non-tendered Rockie Garrett Atkins and leave Freddy Sanchez at second base.

King of Cali thoughts: Atkins I’m sure is someone that Sabean is kicking the tires on. He would be a fall back guy. If the Giants decide to spend a little more money on a free agent in the outfield. They can also add Atkins in the infield. I just see the Giants trying to get Nick Johnson at first or Mark DeRosa at third right now.

Chris Haft of MLB.com reported over the weekend that the Giants declined to tender first baseman Ryan Garko a 2010 contract, casting him into free agency. Garko being eligible for salary arbitration, which would have virtually guaranteed him a significant pay increase from his 2009  salary of $445,100.

King of Cali thoughts: We all know Garko pressed once he was traded to the Giants. I still think he could give the Giants more. He would be a good player to spot start at first and provide some pop off the bench. The Giants have said they are targeting a first baseman, so that’s what makes Garko expendable to them. I thought this was a good trade for Garko last season. Now that they are not bringing him back. It was a wasted move and they basically just gave Scott Barnes to the Indians for free.

  1. I wouldn’t mind a signing of Garett Atkins at third he has put up 378 Rbi’s and 84 Hr’s since 2006 and he just might need a change of sceneary for him to rebound from a down year ,but he can flat out hit.The ryan garko debacle is just that giving up a top 10 prospect in return for nothing.I am hoping the giants sign someone soon because this turtle market is the slowest I have ever seen.

  2. the two main targets for Sabean should be Uggla and Jonny Gomes/Xavier Nady IMO

  3. I like the idea of signing Atkins. Right now his apparent value is down which will allow for a cheaper contract. This also allows Panda to move to first (or stay at 3rd, Atkins has played some first).

With the money saved by signing Atkins instead of injury prone Johnson or old Derosa; the Giants can focus on a decent outfielder. I like the idea of Nady, but when you project Gomes’ numbers to say Jason Bay’s # of AB’s they look like this:

    BA: .267
    HR: 38
    RBI:96

Here’s Bay’s numbers from last year
    BA: .267
    HR: 36
    RBI:119

I like the way that looks

This could be cheap, just the way ownership likes it

  4. I keep hearing fans say they are interested in Xavier Nady. I’m sure he would would come a lot cheaper than others out there since he missed pretty much all of last season.

  5. Wow they look pretty much the same except for the RBI’s but hey you can’t get RBI’s if guys infront of you aren’t on base right? Looks like the Giants should maybe kick the tires on him.

  6. I agree. What do YOU think the Giants should do?

  7. I don’t think Gomes would have that high of an average but I do think he could hit 30+ homers in SF if given the enough amount of at-bats

I think he could be a Carlos Pena type player

  8. Atkins would make a good acquisition, but you have Sabean and Neukom to botch things up. I would get an all star outfielder not get a Cost co special.. The problem is that The Giants go after B talent and that is not making any commitments t the public..

  9. Godzilla from the Yankee’s signed a 1 year deal with Angels and Mike Cammeron just signed a 2 year deal for 7 million with the Red Sox and the Braves are hot to sign Xavier Nady so our oppoutunities are starting to dwindle. I am starting to wonder if our new owner is pinching pennies in his executive office when he can approve Sabean to sign someone’s grandma to upgrade the offense !

  10. Haha. It’s not that I wouldn’t like the Giants to go out an make a huge splash, it’s just that I’m a realist.

I just want Rowand and Renteria to go away.

  11. 415_man,
That’s the same boat they would be in with Uggla. He’s not going to give them a high AVG. but he’s got pop to drive runs in. I don’t think the Giants will go after Gomes, but I’m curious to see how his numbers are next season.

  12. Cameron datzker,

It’s sad to hear that the Giants are looking for 2nd tier player. I was hoping that was just a way to count them out of a big player. Then Sabean flying in like Superman and making a big splash. I’m starting to think that’s not going to happen. I would want to go to the Red Sox or Yankees before coming to the Giants. They show year in and year out that their goal is the World Series. Not to just try to get a Wild Card spot.

  13. I heard a rumor that the Giants are considering offering Jason Bay a 5 year deal. Is there any truth to this?

  14. Mr. B,

Sabean said he’s going to take it slow this offseason and not rush into any signings. Let the market play it’s self out. I have a feeling were going to hear the Giants making a move any day now.

  15. King Colorado,

I’m hoping Rowand and Renteria can have bounce back years. They will not play as good as their contracts are worth, but at least give us some production. I don’t see a big splash coming right now either. I would like to see them address the bats situation though.

  16. King Colorado,

Peter Gammons said the Giants were the only team willing to offer Bay 5 years, but Bay doesn’t want to come play in San Francisco. The Giants have not confirmed this offer, but there is a really good chance that it can be true. Sabean may have just been trying to fly under the radar.
