SF Giants Rumors – Giants Still Interested In Betancourt?

Posted on December 2nd, 2009 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com says the Cubs and Giants were among the teams interested in Rafael Betancourt before the Rockies offered him salary arbitration on Tuesday, multiple major league sources told FOXSports.com.

The question now is will either team be willing to part with a draft pick in order to sign the free agent reliever?

King of Cali thoughts: Betancourt would be a great reliever to add to the bullpen. The Giants might look to save some money by not signing him and hope Sergio Romo, Dan Runzler and Waldis Joaquin can fill the gap to get the ball to Jeremy Affeldt and Brian Wilson.

  2. See…this might not have been an issue if we might have offered arb to Molina. I understand the need to be conservative with cash going into Timmy’s arb hearing but that severely limits the already thin categories of affordable veteran catchers, without gaining any compensation. With Wolf, Hudson, and Molina not offered arb, the Met’s seem to be in a good position to add key elements without consequences this off season.

  3. I’ll pass on Betancourt
don’t get me wrong he’s a good reliever but I like our bullpen the way it is now and I don’t want to lose a draft pick for him
plus I can’t forget when he gave up the grand slam to Renteria last year =)

  4. I think the Giants should have offered arb to Molina. He wouldn’t have accepted it, cause he doesn’t want a one year contract and he knows he would have to share some time with Posey. The Giants just didn’t want to take the chance of him taking it and then all of a suddent there goes a lot of money on a position that doesn’t need it. Plus with Lincecum about to set an arb record and get a lot of $$$. I like Molina but let him go slow down the Mets base paths.

You know what’s funny is everytime I think of Betancourt that’s the visual that comes to mind for me too. lol I also would pass on Betancourt. We have other needs right now and the bullpen isn’t the big problem.
