SF Giants Rumors – Guillen To San Francisco?

The recent San Francisco Giants rumor that is floating around in the thick San Francisco fog is the Giants are interested in the Kansas City Royals OF/DH Jose Guillen. It’s also been reported that the Giants will only be interested if the Royals pay most of his salary.
Bob Dutton of The Kansas City Star told me (via email) If the Royals eat all (or nearly all) of the salary and are willing to take (next to) nothing in return. The offer will need to get sweeter for anything to happen.
Chris Haft the Giants Beat writer also told me (via email) He hasn’t heard anything concrete but it absolutely wouldn’t surprise him. He’d be a good rent-a-player.
Guillen is currently hitting .279 with 13 homers and 47 RBI’s. He would be a nice bat to add to the middle of the Giants lineup. There would have to be a lot more juggling with with defense and lineup to keep the hot hitters in the lineup. Aubrey Huff and Pat Burrell have been in the outfield so Buster Posey could get some AB’s at first base.
If this trade does end up going down. We can see Bengie Molina losing a lot more playing time to the young phenom Posey, and then Burrell or Huff can move to first base to free up room for Guillen in the outfield.

If they get Guillen, they have to figure out what they’re going to do. I’d bet either Whiteside goes down, or something will happen to Schierholtz. You can’t keep bringing in outfielders and not have spots for them. Bochy has already juggled so many lineups thus far that there’s no chemistry to that batting order whatsoever.
Hey GG,
Thanks for the comment! Either way with Guillen or not they still have to figure out what to do. Yes someone will have to go down. There are guys that aren’t pulling their weight, and guys that are on the bench cause they aren’t cutting it when they get the playing time. If the Giants were that good all the way around. We wouldn’t need to make a trade. As far as the chemistry for the batting order. I’m with you on that one, but if guys aren’t hitting…. Something has to be done! I like Molina, but it’s time to put Posey back there. That would free up first base for Huff or Burrell. Then we can bring in another outfielder. I’m not saying this is the move that needs to be done, but this one could work with some juggling by Bochy.

They’re not cutting Rowand so they’ll just have the most expensive bench warmer ever. It has to be Molina, but I always bring up that Lincy, Zito, and Cain love throwing to guy as reason why I don’t think they get rid of him.
I hate speculating, especially with the front office we have, but if we do get him I am not so sure they will embrace Buster at catcher.
Then we have a more clusterF*** in the outfield. Obviously the smart thing would be to move huff to his natural position, but I am done speculating.
Thanks for the reports though, good sources.
Yes to moving Posey to catcher to make room for Huff at 1B,but I am not comfortable with both Burrell AND Guillen patrolling the corner outfield in our park.Is Guillen really better than Uribe ? Right now, our best lineup (in my humble opinion) is Uribe at 3B,Panda at 1B,and Huff in RF (and Nate in RF late innings)
Hey Mike,
Thanks for the comment! It’s been a while since I have seen one from you.
Huff doesn’t play a bad left field. Did you see him track down that ball last night as he ran into the fence? You can leave him out there and bring Burrell in to play first. You are saying to leave Uribe at 3rd and Sandoval at 1st. Does this mean you want Renteria to be your everyday shortstop? It’s not a question of who’s better between Uribe and Guillen. The question is if you want both of them in your lineup or not?
Now these are some good comments! I love talking Giants baseball… Let’s keep them rolling!
Hey Eric from firesabean.com thanks for the comment as well…

I think that we are too hard on Renteria,he is pulling his weight so far this year.Huff can handle RF,and even though Burrell does not cover a lot of ground in LF (neither did Barry during his final years)he has come through at the plate so far.
Our offensive game would be better with Posey and Torres in the lineup on a regular basis instead of Molina and Rowand
I think we need 1 more RBI guy no matter it is Guillen or somebody else because our offense still needs more help since we aren’t scoring enough runs and we are hitting into way too many double plays, see last nights 5 to be exact and we are pace to break the record for the most double plays in a season so if we can find 1 more player who can get it done I say do it along with 1 more quality relief pitcher.
At this point, I’m for trying almost anything.
Burrell has been a bright spot. Admittedly, I wasn’t too excited about the giants getting him. There goes my general managers bid!
I’m really tired of the Rowand, and Molina tandem.
I’m also getting tired of sandoval’s pre-batting routine. I’d like to see him using his head more on the bases, rather than tapping it with his bat.
If they can’t beat the dodgers, or the padres ,( which they haven’t been able to do thus far ) playoffs is just an eight letter word.
FRUSTRATED!
Bochy just needs to have a backbone and make a point to let guys know that if they’re not going to produce, they’re not going to play. I like the trade, let Posey catch and Renteria sit, so we can have Panda, Uribe, and Huff in the infield. And then Burrell, Torres, and Guilen in the outfield. I don’t care how much the pitchers like Molina catching them… Good pitching is only so good when you don’t score runs. I’m sure they’ll survive with throwing to Posey instead.
Bochy always throws out these horrible lineups based on matchups and lifetime numbers, which drives me nuts. I think it’ll be better if he starts putting out lineups based on who’s hot and who’s having good at-bats.
Rowand, Renteria, and Molina need to sit. They’re our biggest doubleplay candidates and just don’t get it done at the plate. I think Panda will get it going eventually, just give him time.
Does any of this makes sense or am I just completely crazy?
Hey Dave,
Thanks for the comment! I’m with you on this one! Rowand, Renteria and Molina aren’t producing right now, so they should sit the bench and if they start producing off the bench. They can get more playing time. Posey needs to go behind the plate, and Huff or Burrell can play first. That will free up an outfield spot for the Giants to bring in Guillen or someone like that.

See you can’t have your RBI leader riding the pine.. we are looking for consistency in the lineup.. the more shuffling, the more difficulty the giants will have to hit a grove. You have 1 of 2 choices, either have uribe start at 3rd and sandoval at first or start huff/burrell(burrell played first base his first year in the majors for 58 games, that was 10 yrs ago), sandoval at 3rd, and uribe at ss.. that means you have roughly 22 million riding the pine. pretty expensive bench that does not produce…. Getting an outfielder creates a horrible jam… the only way this trade works is trading molina for guillen and trading one of the outfielders for a bullpen guy or a future prospect.
I honestly think the giants should make a move if no one really makes a big splash within the division. if the dodgers dont get cliff lee or if the rockies don’t get a solid middle infielder. If the dodgers get lee, the giants shouldn’t waste their blue chips to rent a player. they are better off holding on and working it from within.
No one is saying anything about putting our top RBI guy on the bench. The top 3 in RBI’s for the Giants would all be playing… Juan Uribe (45), Aubrey Huff (42) and Pablo Sandoval (30). All three of them would still be in the lineup.
My question for you is do you want the Giants to just keep sending Rowand, Molina and Renteria out there day in and day out, cause they are getting paid big bucks? Don’t you think we should have the guys that give us the best chance of winning to play? In my opinion we take contracts out of it for now. Just chalk those up as bad contracts and take that out of the equation. Just play the guys that are hitting and give us a chance to win. What do you think?

yup and our 3rd RBI leader is batting either 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, or 7th… i think its time to “JT SNOW” Pablo Sandoval…Renteria is doing his job… hes hitting .331, and whats the reason he should be on the bench?? Molina is batting .257 and handling the pitching staff well. Rowand just sucks! he should stay on the bench. he has started 7 of the last 13 games including three in Toronto(DH availability).
I never said anything about keep running them out their because of their contracts. i do think the best lineup needs to go out there that will lead to a win.
what we are talking about here is adding a player to a crowded outfield.. you have to take into account what players you have right now. and right now you can’t just throw an outfielder onto the team and start him right away w/o sacrificing some players. do you think we can trade a minor leaguer and get guillen and everything will work out? or do you think that this move has to be followed by another move to open up space in the outfield?
