SF Giants Rumors – Haft Chimes In On Posey And Catcher Options
Posted on December 1st, 2009 by admin in SF Giants Rumors
Chris Haft of MLB.com answers questions from Giants fans. One question asked was if Buster Posey would become as good and talented as Mauer. Haft said Posey might not be as much of a “can’t-miss” prospect as Mauer was, but he’s close. The catcher I’ve heard most frequently linked to Posey is Atlanta’s Brian McCann, who’s not as stellar as Mauer but is still very good.
King of Cali thoughts: I myself personally think Posey is going to be better than McCann. Only time will tell if he can raise his game to Mauer status.
When asked about the catcher position. Haft doesn’t think the Giants should sign Ivan Rodriguez. He doesn’t think the Giants need a 38-year-old who hit .249 with 10 home runs. He does think Henry Blanco would provide an excellent complement to Posey if the Giants wanted to ease the rookie into a regular role. Blanco’s agent, Steve Schneider, said that the Giants hadn’t contacted him.
King of Cali thoughts: This would be a good move, because it would save some money. Pudge is going to demand more money and I can’t see him wanting to platoon with Posey. Blanco would come cheap and would be willing to share time with Posey. I would give that signing a thumbs up. =)

Pudge is not going to demand more money. The giants may need to pay him more if there is bidding war for him.
The only way the giants could get out cheap on any catcher is if they wait. The giants should wait but history shows that they aren’t going to wait. If the giants waited last year they wouldn’t have to overpay for Renteria
I agree with you that Blanco would be a good fit.I also like Torreabla as well so Posey could progress into a full time starter. Here is the question who would you rather see the Giants sign given these 2 choices Jermaine Dye or Vlad .If I had to choose between the two of them I like Vlad he has averaged 24 hr and 94 rbi’s a year and has a lifetime Batting average of 321 even know his defense isn’t good his offense alone would net the giants more wins.
Darrin,
Pudge is not going to demand much, but it will be more than Blanco. When you sign Pudge now. You’re siging him for the name, cause he’s not the same player as before. Sabean has said he’s going to wait and not be as aggressive this offseason, so I’m sure the Giants might be able to get a good deal here or there. Sounds like were walking the Flea Market and waiting for a good deal huh?

Mr. B,
Let’s see hmmm… I wanted the Giants to sign Vlad before he went to the Angels. I know he’s not the same player anymore. He only played in 100 games last season and only hit 15 homers. If I had to pick one. I would pick Dye. Dye has said he wouldn’t mind moving to first base, so that may help the Giants. Dye isn’t that greatest choice either, cause he hit under .200 after the All Star break.

I see we disagree but you it is hard to argue Vlad’s career numbers and I still think he can out hit Dye even right now even know he isn’t the player he used to be.I wouldn’t be unhappy with either player, I feel Vlads last year’s numbers were a fluke and I think he will rebound strong in 2010 no matter were he signs.
