SF Giants Rumors – Lineup, Roster, Sandoval

Posted on January 13th, 2010 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News says (via Twitter) Aubrey Huff will bat cleanup for the Giants, GM Brian Sabean says.

Baggarly wasn’t done tweeting either. He also had a few followup tweets. He said in his next tweet. Giants Manager Bruce Bochy says he envisions Sandoval-Huff-DeRosa hitting 3-4-5.

The next tweet says No corresponding 40-man move yet to make space for Aubrey Huff. GM Brian Sabean said someone will be designated. Frandsen? Merkin? Lewis?

In his final tweet. Baggarly says Pablo Sandoval has gained weight in Venezuela, “but not enough to worry about,” Giants GM Brian Sabean said.

King of Cali thoughts: This lineup with Sandoval, Huff and DeRosa hitting 3-4-5 does make sense. Your best hitter should be your 3rd hitter. Then the cleanup guy is someone that should be able to clear the bases with one swing.

There has been a lot of mixed reactions regarding the Huff signing. Who else could the Giants have got for so cheap that does have the potential to put up a lot of homers? This signing was only one year for $3 million and we didn’t have to trade Jonathan Sanchez for a bat. Please comment with your thoughts.

  1. It looks and makes sense what you say king. Wouldnt you agree on trading sanchez for a real good bat tho???? Why not??? Huff signing was a smart economical move and we might get more dividends then what paid him. Guy averages 20 HRS per season and 75+ Rbis….I think the giants should resign bengie or another good bat. Yes, it takes four singles to score bengie but posey and bengie can be catching less….he will be a great mentor for posey. Bengie has pop. put him to bat 6th…..Why not sign another bat????? there is still money….. dont overspend in pitching or bullpen…..we neeeeddddd batttttt……

  2. I can go with Huff if we don’t platoon – that just kills us, no one gets the ABs they need to be consistent. If he doesn’t come through with ~.280 BA or the HRs to offset it then sit him ($3M gamble). What I don’t like about Huff is that he’s the power bat & is a LH’r – we should not have found ourselves in the position where the last guy had to be a LH & the power bat – in AT&T we need RH power (or BLB).

To be honest, of more concern to me is the lead off spot.

  3. I think Huff was our best bet since LaRoche wasn’t biting at our interest. $3 million is nothing to pay for an established hitter with potential to knock in runs and put some balls into the cove. If we trade Sanchez for a hitter, who do we have to fill his place? Especially since we’d most likely be taking on the salary of whoever we traded for, I don’t think we’d be able to acquire a decent pitcher to fill the spot. I’m not overly excited about our lineup for 2010, but i’m content with it. It’s better than last years, and with our pitching staff, and I think we can go pretty deep in contention for the West.

  4. The reason trading Sanchez wouldn’t work is b/c the Giants would only have 3 proven starters going into next season. We are already forced to plug either MadBum or Martinez into the #5 slot. This was a good deal for the Giants, however fans shouldn’t expect too much. They overachieved last year, I think playoffs are still a reach at this point.

  5. So Sandoval-Huff-DeRosa 3-4-5, but we still have that pesky issue of leadoff. True Rowand had his best stretch there last year, but he isn’t speedy in the least so small ball and manufacturing runs option goes out the window. With Huff at first, that puts Pablo back at 3rd, and so where does Uribe go? I personally would take Uribe over Renteria based on last year, and move Renteria to the Super-utility role. De Rosa in left leaves Velez and Schierholtz to share duties in right — right? I still think IO prefer Velez at lead-off with some training and maturation. I guess put Rowand there on the days that Schierholtz plays.

  6. You know I really like this lineup but I think we should add a vertan #5 starter because the youngster wont get it done not yet anyway start him in the bullpin and if he does well then come sept or play off push time move him to the 5. I know ppl may hate me for this but why not take a shot at johnny D. I yes to this signing because hes better then nat velez or anyone else they want to start hands down with him in the lineup we have a great chance to make the playoffs

  7. You know King, I felt a lot of excitement when I viewed Huff’s career stats, and I actually like them better than LaRoche’s career stats. LaRoche’s past avg’s do not measure up to Huff’s in the least bit. LaRoche K’s about 140 times a year also. Huff, despite a bad year is much more established with a few all-star caliber campaigns and is no where near over-the -hill either. The Giants did their home work on this one, saved valuable resources, and saved Jonathan Sanchez with his great stuff and will only get better. Go Giants!!!

  8. The offense will be more improved no matter what.I see Sanchez and Nate and even Rowand having a better year at the plate especially now that they will be healthy and lets hope Renteria even improves he can’t get much worse.

  9. I lol’d when i read Pablo gained weight.

  10. pablo is a fattie…. his international trip hurted him a lil bit…tim to hit the gym meat!!!!

  11. overall I’m okay with the moves The Giants made

the guy I really wanted was Dan Uggla but I don’t think the Marlins really wanted to trade him until the trade deadline

DeRosa will be an improvement over the LF platoon we had last year and Huff I think is an improvement over Ishikawa/Garko and

I like the Huff deal since it’s only for one year and next year with him and Renteria gone maybe we can make a run at signing Carl Crawford or Adam Dunn

if the pitching can be at least as good as last year we should have a good shot at making the postseason

  12. I really like this lineup if Huff can produce like he did 2 years ago. I just hope Velez is able to play a lot more. He really brought some spark to the lineup later in the season. I can’t help but laugh at Pablo’s weight gain, but I’m hoping he can trim down for this upcoming season like he said he would.

  13. on the Sandoval weight issue I’m wondering since supposedly he lost weight did he gain that weight back and more? or did he just gain some of it back?

  14. The Giants are going to Huff and Puff and blow Dodger stadium down !

  15. I say get another fielder to lead off

  16. forget going after Adam Dunn we could get AGon as a free agent. Pujols, Fielder, Dunn and Gonzalez are all free agents next year and even Manny is also. Get AGon!

  17. black&orange:

I agree…renteria and huff will be out of contract next year….I will run for adrian gonzales or prince fielder. Forget dunn and pujols will most likely resign with the cards before the season is over….he aint going anywhere….I have the feeling adrian will be traded during this season. Adrian_ pablo_ derosa…lets look for a good shortstop…or have derosa play short and look for another bat threat position player….

  18. Sorry but Fielder and Agon will not be free agents next year I don’t know where you got that from
