SF Giants Rumors: Players Linked To The Giants As The Trade Deadline Looms

Posted on July 23rd, 2012 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FoxSports.com say the San Francisco Giants had a scout in attendance for the Rays right-hander James Shields start against the Mariners.

Shields is currently 8-6 with a 4.39 ERA. His contract with the Rays still has club options for 2013 ($9 million), and 2014 ($12 million). Which means he doesn’t have to be a rental player.

Danny Knobler of CBS Sports says (via twitter) the Royals Jonathan Broxton could be a possible fit for the Giants. I’ve heard a lot of mixed reactions about this from Giants fans. Some don’t want to see the ex-Dodgers player in a Giants uniform. Let’s not forget that Brad Penny was rocking that Dodger blue before too!

Andrew Baggarly of CSN Bay Area says (via twitter) the Giants want power off the bench, but are not considering Rick Ankiel. The G-men are looking for a right-handed bat at first base, third base or outfield.

Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com says a Giants coach was asked to describe the type of player the team could use and he said “Cody Ross“. Rosenthal also says the Red Sox are unlikely to trade Ross. He also points out that the bullpen lacks a strikeout punch in the late innings, but the offense remains a bigger problem.

Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FoxSports.com say the Giants are interested in the Indians closer Chris Perez. The Indians might be willing to move Perez because they’re deep in relievers. He will be arbitration eligible for the 2nd time this offseason, and will earn around $7 million. Which means he won’t be a rental player for the Giants. Perez currently has 26 saves and a 3.06 ERA in 37 games. He has 2 blown saves on the year, and Giants closer Santiago Casilla has 6 under his belt.

  1. Can someone explain how it was that the Giants did not re-sign Cody Ross at the end of ’11?

  2. with brandon belt having such a tough time this year is huff a possibility anymore?

  3. Huff remains on the DL.

  4. Why have the giants not look towards Baltimore’s Mark Reynolds? Maybe close thing to Cody Ross, but with power. And just maybe get a package from Baltimore Mark Reynolds and Brian Roberts? Comments?
