SF Giants Rumors – Rumors That Didn’t Pan Out!
Posted on February 1st, 2010 by admin in SF Giants Rumors
Dan Uggla – The Giants have been linked to Uggla all offseason. The Marlins wanted Jonathan Sanchez in the deal. The Giants have lost Randy Johnson (retired) and Brad Penny (Cardinals). With that said I’m sure that’s why the Giants felt like they couldn’t part with J-Sanchez.
Nick Johnson – It was reported that the Giants had an offer on the table for Johnson, but he decided to take less money to sign with the Yankees ($5.5 million). The Giants had upped their offer to Johnson to $6 million, but that wasn’t tempting enough to land him.
Johnny Damon – The Giants have been linked to Damon. This is because it’s been known that the Giants needed a outfielder and leadoff hitter. When the Giants decided Mark DeRosa was going to be in left-field. That pretty much shut the door on any Damon signing in San Francisco. Damon is still a free agent, so let’s wait and see where he lands.
Adam LaRoche – The Giants had a two year contract offer on the table for LaRoche. He declined it, and the Giants ended up signing Aubrey Huff. LaRoche signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks for a one year contract for less money ($4.5 million). The Giants had offered him a 2-year contract worth $17 million.
Eric Byrnes – The Giants never came out and said they were interested in signing Byrnes. KNBR the Giants Flagship station had Byrnes on the air a couple times and he made it public he wouldn’t mind playing for the Giants. Byrnes has since signed with the Seattle Mariners for the league minimum ($400,000). The Arizona Diamondbacks are paying his remaining $11 million that they owe him before they released him.

Uggla would have cost too much, both in terms of salary and the players we’d have to give…
I don’t see why they didnt try harder to keep Penny…
Johnson…well, oh well…
Damon…the last thing we needed was a 36 year old with the weakest arm in baseball and a bat that only looked good because of Yankee Stadium
LaRoche…that ones kinda a bummer, but 2/$17 means we’d have been overpaying him. Huff was a way better deal
Byrnes…if we had the roster space I don’t see why a league minimum salary wouldn’t have been worth takin a flyer on him.
Heres my thoughts on everything you mentiond.
Uglla well jackie put it well I wouldn’t have traded sanchez at the risk of getting uggla I mean at first I was all for it but look at the long term if we do that we dont have our pitching staff its hard enough to find a 5 let alone our 3 or 4 and a 5 would’ve been a disaster.
As far as nick johnson goes I really didn’t like him to much. I thought of him as a cheap knock off to bengie monlina he would’ve actually been worse. Just as slow and not that many homeruns or rbi’s.
Good Ol Johnny D .. I still want this signing I hate the fact that we will go in with nate or velez like I said I don’t mind them but they are not our future outfield so im still pullin for JD.
Laroche well he did a good thing he knew playing at the china basin would be hard for him. He just has to look at the other stars who came here and had the hr numbers drop along with the rbi’s for instance Rowand and Garko and Winn and many many more.. this isnt a park for the lower end power hitters so he might of played it smart if he has a great 1 yr in arizon could be lookin for that big pay day like abreu but if he doesn’t do anythin with az he would’ve wished he took the money cuz he could end up cheaper..
Eric B .. Well I wish he would have become a giant but he didn’t so much for a wishful lineup good luck in seattle Eric the west coast will miss ya play hard and stay healthy
