SF Giants Rumors: Sabean, Alou and Burrell Scout Jose Abreu

Cuban Slugger Jose Abreu

Cuban Slugger Jose Abreu

We’ve already heard that the San Francisco Giants were scouting Cuban Slugger Jose Abreu. Ben Badler of Baseball America has confirmed that every team had someone there to watch Abreu, but the Giants had a strong presence at the showcase in the Dominican Republic. Badler says the Giants were led by GM Brian Sabean, special assistant Felipe Alou, and special assignment scout Pat Burrell.

Signing Abreu would mean that Brandon Belt would be moving to left field, or could be a trading chip for the Giants. If they decided to just go the free agent rout, they would have to surrender their 14th pick if they signed a top hitter in the free agent market that has a qualifying offer. Signing Abreu wouldn’t cost the Giants a draft pick.
