SF Giants Rumors – Should Posey Switch Positions?
Posted on February 9th, 2010 by admin in SF Giants Rumors
Andrew Baggarly reported on his blog (last week). Buster Posey isn’t “etched in stone” to begin the season at Triple-A Fresno. Bruce Bochy said him and Brian Sabean have talked about giving Posey a look at other infield positions. This is to increase Posey’s options of getting into games.

When Baggarly told Posey about Bochy’s comments. Posey’s first response was “I hope someone gets me some new gloves!” It’s also been reported by Baggarly that Posey has put on 15 pounds this offseason.
Side Notes
Edgar Renteria (elbow surgery) is healthy and so is Mark DeRosa (wrist surgery).
King of Cali thoughts: Now this really got me thinking. Wouldn’t it be best to just move Posey to another position, so he doesn’t have to go through the everyday grind of being a catcher? Moving him to another position can also prolong his career by a couple more years. I’m sure the Giants are pretty set in having him as their future everyday catcher. They probably won’t really consider moving his position until later on in his career. We just need to get this guy use to some major league pitching, so he can hit like we know he’s capable of.

This idea is pretty far outside the box…………and I actually really like it! Usually i’m a pretty strong supporter of the players on the Giants, but Renteria is a complete joke. I say we let Posey get some run at SS, maybe in some type of platoon situation with Renteria. What people don’t realize is that Posy played SS until his junior year in college when he made the switch to catcher. Dude’s got a cannon (has been clocked at 94 mph) so I see no reason why he could not play a solid major league SS. And God knows he has a better bat then Renteria. I know it probably would never happen because Bochy is so set in his ways, but i think it would be something that would help the team and help Posey adjust to MLB pitching.
I don’t think it’s a bad idea trying him at different positions for a while but I think he has to be our catcher of the future starting immediately next year when Bengie is gone if not during the middle of this upcoming season
I like this idea but I have an issue with it as well. What do we do if we let him play 2nd and he starts crushing the ball and doing such a good job that hes better then Sanchez bench a guy who is being paid so much .. I love to see him switch postions since he has such a hard throwing arm could we maybe try him in right????
So if he switches positions, who are we planning to put behind the plate?
we have other catchers in our system like Hector Sanchez and Tommy Joseph who both look like good hitters but they won’t be ready for a while
bottom line Posey should be our catcher for the future
My point exactly.
Its not like anyone is talking about permanently switching Posey to a new position. Its obvious that he is our catcher of the future in the mold of Joe Mauer. I think it would just be a good idea this season, in order to get him some MLB at bats, to platoon him in different positions. He could play about 4 games per week between SS, 3B, RF, and catching every now and then to spell Benji. Just sit Renteria, let Uribe play SS full time, and turn Posey in to the “super utility” player for this season. I think that would give the Giants the best shot to win and to improve Buster’s game.
