It was reported by David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (via Twitter) that the San Francisco Giants are one of the teams that have contacted pitcher Tim Hudson. Hudson will turn 39 in July and made $9 million in 2013. The Atlanta Braves did not give Hudson a qualifying offer, so any team that signs him will not have to give up their first round draft pick. It is reported that the Braves have made Hudson a one year; $8 million offer to return in 2014. I’m not sure if the Giants will want to offer Hudson $9 million or even a second year to entice him to come back to the West Coast. I believe Hudson will filter his offers, and end up back with the Braves on a one year deal.
Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle confirms (via Twitter) that Hudson, Dan Haren and Bronson Arroyo are on a larger list of starters (could be a dozen) that the Giants are kicking the tires on.
Schulman (via Twitter) doesn’t know if the Giants will bid for Masahiro Tanaka, whose posting is delayed by negotiations for a new agreement between the MLB and Japan Leagues. Tons of Giants fans that we’ve been hearing from would love to see the Giants sign Tanaka.
Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com reports (via Twitter) that sources have told him Ervin Santana is seeking $100 million and Ricky Nolasco is seeking $80 million, both for five-year deals. I would have to imagine that the Giants wouldn’t be willing to give that many years or pay that kind of money for either of those players.
Reliever Javier Lopez is drawing a lot of interest on the free agent market, but Lopez is still hoping for a return to the Giants says Chris Haft of MLB.com.
“I’m continuing to talk to the Giants,” said Barry Meister, Lopez’s agent.
Outfielder Gregor Blanco was awarded the Wilson award. It’s given to the top defensive player for each organization.
