Once infielder Angel Villalona reported to camp on Friday, Villalona was reinstated from the restricted list by Major League Baseball. He’s now officially back on the San Francisco Giants 40-man roster.
Infielder Joe Panik is going to be splitting time this spring between second and shortstop, says Alex Pavlovic of the San Jose Mercury News (via Twitter).
In another Pavlovic tweet, he says pitcher Ramon Ramirez settled his visa issue and reported to camp. Ramirez was the last player to report to camp.
Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com (via Twitter) says Pablo Sandoval will do extra work in the morning, and more conditioning after workouts to drop pounds.
Manager Bruce Bochy said Hector Sanchez might be on the Sandoval plan. “He’s got some work to do on the conditioning side,” says Bochy (via Pavlovic tweet).
Marty Lurie (via Twitter) says he likes what he sees so far of Kensuke Tanaka. Lurie points out that Tanaka has good quick hands at second. He has the Japanese style feet moving at the plate, and his line drives fall in.
Chris Haft of MLB.com tells us (via Twitter) Bochy has made it official that Matt Cain will get the Opening Day start on April 1 in Los Angeles. Cain will oppose the Dodgers ace, Clayton Kershaw.
In another Haft tweet, he says Ryan Vogelsong will get the start for Saturday’s Cactus League opener against the Angels.
