SF Giants Rumors: Blanco Could Be A Lock, Roster Spots In Question

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle says outfielder Gregor Blanco is as close to a stone-cold lock as any non-roster invitee could be.
“He’s done all he can do to make this club,” said manager Bruce Bochy. “He’s played great. We can’t say anything definite on what’s going to happen. I will say he’s played as good as anyone this spring.”

Blanco has used his bat and legs to show he belongs on the San Francisco Giants 25-man roster. Schulman says if Blanco gets a spot that leaves Brett Pill, Brandon Belt, Ryan Theriot, Mike Fontenot, Manny Burriss and Joaquin Arias competing for three jobs.

The spot for backup catcher is still very close between Chris Stewart and Eli Whiteside. It’s so close that they might have to flip a coin and the winner gets the job. Just a suggestions… Not really!

What’s your thoughts on the 25-man roster?

Boy, I just dont see how he can make it. They should be keeping belt, pill, and an infielder, so that make 3 without him. As for the catcher, I just cannot understand why they even keep Eli. What Boch should do is survey the pitchers in a private ballot. Stew would win in a landslide. Eli even with a “healed” arm does not have the rocket Stewart has. And arm trouble did not lead to the many pass balls…just ask Timmy. But I know who he would vote for. Last year after one game with pass balls and Tim lost the game, it seems Eli did not catch any of his games for the rest of the season…I think that is correct.

If the Giants step it up this year, it will be because the team has gotten faster on the base paths. Blanco is a critical part of our new team speed. Melkey, Pagan and Blanco may be able to steal 70-80 bags together this year and that will turn into extra runs we badly need. Blanco got his 9th stolen base this Spring which is incredible!

I love our 2012 outfield too. We don’t need old slow guys like Huff and Burrell playing like old men. Even Cody playing injured last year was too slow. This is a new beginning! GO Giants!
