SF Giants Rumors: Brett Pill In The Super Utility Role?

Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com says Brett Pill took some ground balls at third base yesterday, and will also get some work at second base and left field.
Seems like the San Francisco Giants are trying to see if Pill is a fit for the super utility role. He has the power that the Giants can use off the bench and even in spot starts. If he doesn’t show that he can be versatile, he could lose out in a lot of AB’s with Brandon Belt and Aubrey Huff ahead of him at first base.

What’s your thoughts on Pill moving around the field to find a spot to get more AB’s?

  • Steverino says:

I think Pill is in a head to head competition with Belt for a single seat on the roster. The winner stays with the big boys and the loser packs for Fresno. Adding 3B to Pill’s resume helps him in that battle. Doesn’t hurt his trade value either

It’s going to be tough for either one to get much playing time in Bruce Bochy’s outfield — unless Bochy starts dorking around with Nate’s playing time. And that gives an edge to Pill if the 3B thing works out. I just don’t see Belt getting many opportunities at all unless Huff is so bad that Sabean throws him out.

I think we need to find a way to get his bat in the lineup. He showed last season that he has power and makes contact

  • Anthony says:

The man can hit and he deserves a chance! Belt already had his

  • Kayaker Dave says:

Pill payed well in his limited time last year. The Giants need some hitting and I will be puling for him, although I wish he was a lefty. You can never have enough players capable of hitting into McCovey Cove. 🙂

  • Nick Lazos says:

I believe Phil is better player than Belt, regardless of the numbers of both players had in the minors. That said, both should be starters & keep Huff on the bench until he can be unloaded via trade or released. Both rookies need to be able to play an extended time in the field, in order to mature at the major league level.
