Now that all the festivities are over the San Francisco Giants can start to focus on the 2013 season. There’s no more Opening Day, MVP Award or Ring Ceremony’s. It’s time to get things rolling and start marching ahead to another NL West Championship!
The red hot Rockies were stopped dead in their tracks last night, thanks to Madison Bumgarner and the Giants bullpen. Bumgarner wasn’t on point but he did his job to get the ball to the bullpen with a lead. Bumgarner now has two of the Giants four wins this season.
Relievers Santiago Casilla (1.1 IP), Jeremy Affeldt (1 IP) and Sergio Romo (1 IP) tossed 3.1 innings of shutout ball and only allowed one hit. That was a leadoff double in the top of the ninth inning. Romo was still able to shut down the Rockies for his 4th save of the young season. Romo has saved every Giants victory thus far.
The Giants got a shot in the arm in the first inning by outfielder Hunter Pence. Pence hit a 3-run bomb that gave the Giants a quick 3-0 lead. That’s also Pence’s 3rd homer on the year, and it wasn’t a cheap one either! Giants fans are starting to see the real Pence, not the one that couldn’t find his stroke after the trade last season.
After tonight’s game, the Giants will need to break out their sunglasses and sunscreen for a while. The next six out of eight games (after tonight) will be day games. Get ready to listen to these games on the radio if you have a day job!
It’s no secret that Pablo Sandoval looks heavy, but it’s sure fun to watch this guy play! Sandoval still provides great defense at third and boy can he hit! He’s currently hitting .360 with 2 homers and 5 RBI in 7 games for the Giants.
According to Elias Sports Bureau, Matt Cain became the second starting pitcher in Giants history to give up at least nine runs in an inning. The other was John Cronin on September 27, 1902 against the Brooklyn Superbas (via Chris Haft Twitter links). As time went on, the Superbas eventually became the Dodgers.
