SF Giants Rumors: Trade Deadline Edition

JavierLopezMark Bowman of MLB.com says the Braves are looking for a left-handed reliever. I’m sure you’re wondering why I’m talking about the Braves wish list? If the San Francisco Giants are sellers at the trade deadline then this means they could be shopping around Javier Lopez or possibly Jeremy Affeldt.

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports (via Sulia) that he talked with a rival front office guy who confirmed that if the Giants are buying at the deadline, their best trade bait is the pitching in the low minors, but he also said that with catching at such a premium, some teams will ask for Double-A catcher Andrew Susac in return for big-league-talent.

Chris Haft of MLB.com lists the Giants’ all-time top 5 in-season trades. I will list them below, but please check out the article to read more details about each trade.

July 5, 1987: Giants receive 3B-OF Kevin Mitchell and LHP’s Dave Dravecky and Craig Lefferts from the Padres for 3B Chris Brown, RHP Mark Grant and LHP’s Keith Comstock and Mark Davis.

July 30, 2001: Giants receive RHP Jason Schmidt and 1B-OF John Vander Wal from the Pirates for OF Armando Rios and RHP Ryan Vogelsong.

Aug. 21, 1987: Giants receive RHP Rick Reuschel from the Pirates for RHP’s Scott Medvin and Jeff Robinson.

July 30, 1996: Giants receive LHP Kirk Rueter and RHP Tim Scott from the Expos for RHP Mark Leiter.

July 27, 2012: Giants receive 2B Marco Scutaro from the Rockies for INF Charlie Culberson.

July 31, 2012: Giants receive RF Hunter Pence from the Phillies for RF Nate Schierholtz, C Tommy Joseph and RHP Seth Rosin.

I know that’s six trades but the last two are kind of linked at the hip, so Haft counted them together as one. Don’t forget to check out the article to read more details on each trade.

I cannot believe that you would leave out the infamous “White Flag” trade of 1997, where the Giants received Wilson Alvarez, Danny Darwin and Roberto Hernandez for Keith Foulke, Bobby Howry, Lorenzo Barcelo, Ken Vining, Mike Caruso, and Brian Manning.

That trade rejuvenated the Giants and propelled them past the Los Angeled Dodgers into the post-season.
