Over the weekend the San Francisco Giants officially declined the options for Barry Zito and Andres Torres. This makes them officially free agents. By declining Zito’s option, the Giants now must pay him a $7 million buyout. Talk about a nice parting gift for Zito.

Today is the day that the Giants must decide if they’re going to exercise Ryan Vogelsong‘s option for $6.5 million or decline the option and pay him $300K as the buyout.
Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com reports (via Twitter) bad news for the Giants organization from Ben Badler. Outfielder Gustavo Cabrera, who signed for $1.3 million last year, sustained a major off-field injury. It’s reported that Cabrera fell in his home and nearly cut off his hand.
Potential Pitching Targets
The Toronto Blue Jays didn’t give Josh Johnson a qualifying offer. This means the Giants could be in play. He’s coming off a down year that ended with him on the DL. This could be a nice low risk, high reward signing.
Tim Hudson wasn’t given a qualifying offer from the Atlanta Braves. The Giants might start kicking the tires on Hudson. Word on the street is the Giants already have interest.
The Cincinnati Reds also passed on a qualifying offer to Bronson Arroyo. I’m sure the Giants will be interested in reaching out to Arroyo’s agent.
