SF Giants Rumors: Fontenot vs. Keppinger, Whiteside Non-Tendered, Ex-Giants Sign

The verdict is out! The San Francisco Giants have decided to sign Mike Fontenot (1-year), and non-tender Jeff Keppinger.

From the comments left on SF Giants Rumors Facebook it sounds like a lot of fans wanted to see Keppinger back in a Giants uniform.

Keppinger came over to the Giants (July) from the Astros (traded for Henry Sosa and Jason Stoffel). He hit a combined .277 with a .300 OBP with the Giants and Astros.

Also Non-Tendered

The Giants have also decided to non-tender catcher Eli Whiteside. It’s likely the Giants will have Chris Stewart backup Buster Posey. The Grizzlies catcher will be Hector Sanchez, so Whiteside might have to accept a backup role in Fresno if he decides to re-sign with the Giants.

Ex-Giants On The Move

The Marlins have signed Aaron Rowand to a minor league deal, and the Brewers have signed Travis Ishikawa to a minor league deal as well.

SF Giants Rumors: Wilson’s Long Term Health A Question, Giants Can Afford To Take Risks

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle thinks the Giants might have some concerns about Brian Wilson‘s long-term health, and that’s why they may pick up Jeremy Affeldt‘s $5 million option.

Matt Cain could be close to signing a contract extension since he’s a free agent after the 2012 season. He’s a top priority for the Giants right now since Brian Sabean has said he wants to keep the pitching staff together.

Schulman also believes the Giants revenues and payroll have reached a threshold that allows them to take contract risks for the future in order to win now, especially with the Aaron Rowand and Barry Zito deals coming off the books in 2013 and 2014.

SF Giants Rumors: G-Men Need Their Swag, Rowand & Tejada Reactions

Since Aaron Rowand and Miguel Tejada have been DFA. The Giants are showing they have a pulse by defeating the Cubs just hours after the clubhouse shakeup.

This weekend the first place Diamondbacks come to town, and it’s a make or break series for the G-Men. Every game from here on out is a playoff game.

Earlier in the year the Giants still had that swag about them. They knew if they can get on the scoreboard or keep the game close, they would find a way to win it at the end.

Once August came around something took that swag away. I don’t know if it was the dog days of summer? Let’s just hope September brings the magic back to this group of guys.

SF Giants Rumors: Rowand And Tejada DFA, Stats In A Giants Uniform

The San Francisco Giants have decided to shakeup the clubhouse today. Miguel Tejada and Aaron Rowand have been Designated For Assignment (DFA). Tejada was brought in on a 1-year deal ($6.5M). Rowand on the other hand was brought in on a 5-year deal, and still had another year left on his contract. The Giants are eating up $12 million that Rowand is owed for next year.

SF Giants Rumors: Sanchez, Rowand, Bell, Bonds, Schierholtz, Etc.

The San Francisco Giants showed some heart last night by coming back from a 5-2 deficit. Hector Sanchez got his first Major League hit and RBI. The G-Men did go on to lose the game in the 9th.

It’s still not time to hit the panic button. Last year at this time the Giants were 6 1/2 games back of the Padres. Right now they’re just 2 back of the Diamondbacks, and they still have 6 games left with them.

Aaron Rowand had a couple of chances last night to get back in the good graces of Giants fans, but he didn’t take advantage of his opportunities. He did however manage to get the fans to boo him. That’s what happens when you ground out with bases loaded and then pop up in the infield with a runner on 3rd base and 1 out. I’m just saying…

“He came up with men on base, it’s frustrating. Not just for us, for the fans. We know it,” Bruce Bochy‘s thoughts on Rowand getting loud boos.

Giants Claim Bell

The Giants have claimed Heath Bell off waivers from the Padres, but it’s very unlikely that the Padres would deal him to the Giants. Bell will be a free agent at the end of the year, but I’m sure the Padres are going to want a lot in return for Bell. There is a 48-hour window for the Giants and Padres to make a deal. My guess is Bell will remain with the Padres for the rest of the year.

Word On The Street

Word on the street is the big fella (Barry Bonds) is going to be at the game tonight. I’m thinking maybe the Giants should put a uniform on him and bat him 4th. I’m just saying…

Foot Fracture

Nate Schierholtz has a foot fracture, but will continue to play on it.

“He’s going to need a little time. I think we can get by, maybe he’s available to pinch hit. He was running pretty good with the hairline fracture,” Bochy on Schierholtz.

SF Giants Rumors: Belt’s Breakout Game, Player Injuries

Have a game Brandon Belt! Belt had a career high four hit game, and one of them was a 3-Run BOMB!

I know I’m not the only one that thinks Bruce Bochy needs to play Belt more. We have a lot of slumping players, and I don’t think they should just keep getting trotted out their cause they’re veterans. It’s time to let Belt show you what he can do on an everyday basis.

The Giants made a move this weekend by placing closer Brian Wilson on the DL, and bringing up Steve Edlefsen. Edlefsen made his MLB Debut yesterday, and got the Giants out of BIG jam! He pitched 1.1 innings and had 2 strikeouts. Edlefsen retired all four hitters that he faced.

There was a total of 11 players hurt during this road trip and 5 of them had to take a trip to the DL.

SF Giants Rumors: If You’re Injured And You Know It, Clap Your Hands!!

John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle says the Giants put Sergio Romo on DL with inflammation to the right elbow. Dan Runzler has been recalled to take Romo’s place on the roster. Romo’s active 13 scoreless innings pitched streak will now have to be put on hold.

The news everyone has been waiting to hear is finally hear… Carlos Beltran is headed to the DL. Beltran is only hitting .244 in a Giants uniform, but let’s hope he can get healthy ASAP. There is still time for him to come back and be the impact player they traded for down the stretch.

Miguel Tejada will skip his rehab starts, and has been activated since Beltran is headed to the DL.

Andrew Baggarly tweets that Nate Schierholtz may have broken his right foot on a foul ball in the 8th inning yesterday, and is going for x-rays. Please stay tuned…. I’m feeling hurt just writing about all these injuries!

In another Baggarly tweet he says Jeff Keppinger is getting an MRI on his wrist. Keppinger jammed it in a collision with Freeman last night.

Yet, in another tweet from Baggarly. He says Aaron Rowand is out with a strained intercostal (side) muscle. The only available bench players in today’s game is Mark DeRosa and the back up catcher.

DeRosa to be released or traded?

Recently I sent an email to Mychael Urban of CSNBayArea.com, and asked the following question.

“When Cody Ross is ready to come back, and if Andres Torres doesn’t have to take a trip to the DL, do you see the Giants maybe releasing Mark DeRosa or putting him on the DL since his wrist is flaring up? Mike Fontenot can back up at shortstop, second and third base. Aaron Rowand is hot right now, and Nate Schierholtz still has value on the team.”

A day later Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports had the same thoughts as I did. Rosenthal says the Giants are set in the infield and their outfield is getting rather crowded, so he believes DeRosa looks like a prime candidate to be traded.

Breaking News, Brandon Belt is on the Opening Day Roster!

Young phenom Brandon Belt has made the Opening Day Roster. Travis Ishikawa has been placed on waivers to make room for Belt. The Giants will have a nice bat added to their lineup with Belt playing first base. The Giants still have some decisions to make when Cody Ross is ready to come off the DL.

Do you think the Giants should release Aaron Rowand or Nate Schierholtz at that time if no trades are made by then? Maybe it’s time to just eat that contract and keep the left-handed bat (Schierholtz) coming off the bench.

Roster Decisions Still Looming For the Giants

The Cactus League is finally over and the Giants are back in San Francisco. I can picture the flight back, players were probably singing “I’m going, going, back, back to Cali, Cali” (Notorious B.I.G.). Okay maybe they weren’t, but I do know they were all ready to finally get out of Arizona and start their title defense! After a while these Spring Training games just seem like groundhogs day.

The roster still is not finalized at this time. The Giants are still tight lipped about their plans with Brandon Belt. The closer situation is still up in the air at this time as well. Brian Wilson is likely to start on the DL. Which means another arm has a chance of cracking the Opening Day Roster. If Wilson starts on the DL. He will likely be ready for the Giants Home Opener on April 8th.

Who’s In Right?

Fan favorite Cody Ross is starting the season on the DL, so who’s in right field seems to be the question? The Giants have a number of options they can go with. Maybe they can go with Aubrey Huff in right, which I don’t see happening much. AT&T Park has a spacious right-center field, and you need someone that can cover a lot of ground out there. We have heard of maybe the Giants putting Aaron Rowand in the lineup, and if he plays center, Andres Torres can slide over to right field. Opening Day is Thursday night, so the answer to who’s in right should be answered soon.

Side Notes

Two ex-Giants have been released from their teams, or should I say Ex-teams? Randy Winn (Orioles) and Pedro Feliz (Royals) are currently looking for new teams. If I have to take a wild guess. I would say Winn might be calling it a career and Feliz might be able to get one more team to give him a shot.
