Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports says the San Francisco Giants are trying to trade Jeremy Affeldt and/or Ramon Ramirez.
The Giants recently picked up Affeldt’s option for $5 million. Ramirez is in his final year of being arbitration eligible and will be getting a raise from his 2011 salary ($1.6 million). Ramirez will get around $2.5 to $3 million in 2012.
The Winter Meetings start Monday December 5th, so I’m sure that’s when Brian Sabean will start to dangle these relievers to see what possible moves are out there.
What’s your thoughts on Affeldt and Ramirez on the trade market?

John Shea says (via twitter) that GM Brian Sabean will speak with Carlos Beltran‘s camp today.
“It’s a fluid situation as well as other conversations we’re in,” Sabean on Beltran.
Bill Ladson of MLB.com says the Nationals are looking to acquire bench strength at first base. They are kicking the tires on free agent Mark DeRosa, who can play infield and the outfield.
DeRosa is a good guy in the locker room, and was a good player for the San Francisco Giants when healthy, but he was injured pretty much his whole Giants tenure. If he can stay healthy and his wrist holds up. He will be a decent pickup for someone.
Alternate Road Jersey
Sportslogos.net says they have learned from a reliable source that the Giants will be bringing back a slightly updated version of their 1980′s road jersey as a road alternate jersey for the 2012 season.

The San Francisco Giants said (via twitter) that they have extended the contracts for GM Brian Sabean and Manager Bruce Bochy through 2013 with a club option for 2014.
This extension makes sense to me, since they helped bring a World Series Championship to San Francisco!
What’s your thoughts on their contract extensions?

John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle says the San Francisco Giants need to sign outfielder Carlos Beltran. He’s the fourth best hitter in the free agent market.
Shea believes the Giants can go with Brandon Crawford at shortstop with Beltran, Buster Posey, Freddy Sanchez and a in-shape Aubrey Huff in the lineup. Let’s not forget about Pablo Sandoval either!
Now for the centerfield postion. Shea thinks Coco Crisp seems doable unless Brian Sabean sees a comeback story in Grady Sizemore.
Gary Brown Update
Henry Schulman said (via twitter) that the Giants are shutting down Gary Brown from playing in the AFL. Brown got a nasty virus and is still recovering. The Giants think he’s fatigued from his first full season and playing winter ball.

For those of you that haven’t already heard… Pablo Sandoval and Carlos Beltran came up short in the Rawlings Gold Glove Awards. Placido Polanco of the Phillies and Andre Ethier of the hated Dodgers beat out Sandoval and Beltran for the Gold Gloves at 3rd and right field.
CSNBayArea.com has reported that San Francisco Giants number one pick (29th overall) in the 2011 draft (Joe Panik) has been named to the AFL Rising Stars Game.
Panik is currently hitting .250 with two home runs in 16 games for the Scottsdale Scorpions. Let’s hope he can work on his swing to get that average up a little bit. He does however have a .344 on-base percentage.
Brian Sabean has said that Panik is playing in the AFL to get some higher level at-bats. He was drafted as a shortstop, but is playing 2nd base to get playing time in the AFL. He’s the 4th infielder selected by the Giants in the first round since 1985. The Giants front office has a lot of high hopes for Panik. Marc Raimondi of the New York Post has compared Panik to ex-Giant Rich Aurilia.
The Rising Stars Game will be televised on MLB Network this Saturday at 5:10pm. Are you going to be watching?

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle thinks the Giants might have some concerns about Brian Wilson‘s long-term health, and that’s why they may pick up Jeremy Affeldt‘s $5 million option.
Matt Cain could be close to signing a contract extension since he’s a free agent after the 2012 season. He’s a top priority for the Giants right now since Brian Sabean has said he wants to keep the pitching staff together.
Schulman also believes the Giants revenues and payroll have reached a threshold that allows them to take contract risks for the future in order to win now, especially with the Aaron Rowand and Barry Zito deals coming off the books in 2013 and 2014.

Mychael Urban of CSNBayArea.com was able to chat with Giants GM Brian Sabean. Below is the highlights of the phone interview.
Sabean is in Arizona for organizational meetings. They started meetings the day after the season ended. Sabean stresses that it’s about roster management right now.
“Including who you may just be willing to take off the roster, cause you have younger kids to put on,” says Sabean.
With the 13 arbitration eligible players and 8 free agents. Sabean says the payroll will go up incrementally and not dramatically.
When asked about if he would be interested in trading any of the starting pitching. Sabean said, “I think were open to anything as you go forward, you have to be.”
Brandon Crawford has done a good job of making adjustments and had some good at-bats. “His batting average, he’s earned down here,” Sabean on Crawford.
Gary Brown has played real nice in the outfield and is showing some signs of fatigue. He has had some nice at-bats though.
Joe Panik hasn’t played 2nd base since high school, and is playing 2nd in the Arizona Fall League. They have him playing in the AFL to get him some higher level at-bats.
Freddy Sanchez will start throwing around December 1st. “The goal is to have him ready for Opening Day,” Sabean on Sanchez.
Buster Posey has been on the field hitting 3 days a week, and catching bullpens off the pitching machine. Posey’s swing is still the same, so that’s the good news Giants fans.
“He’s taking everything they’re throwing at him, and coming through with flying colors,” Sabean on Posey’s rehab.

SF Giants Rumors has learned that Pablo Sandoval is in Venezuela right now, but he’ll be back in Arizona this offseason to work on his fitness. Sandoval’s goal is to be in great shape, and report to Spring Training around 235-240 pounds, but with the right level of both strength and agility!!
Last year after the San Francisco Giants won the 2010 World Series. Sandoval was told by GM Brian Sabean that he would start the season in the minors if he didn’t meet weight requirements. As we all know Sandoval worked hard, and his offense/defense reaped the benefits.
Sandoval’s 2011 Stats
G 117, AVG .315, HR 23, RBI 70, R 55, OBP .357

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle says Brian Sabean revealed to him that the 2012 payroll will be “in and around” $125 million, which means no increase over last year. That’s not breaking news, as we posted that here last week, but the new kicker is Sabean told him he could go to ownership and ask for more money based on a specific player they’re targeting.
Let’s hope this means the Giants will try to make a splash. I still don’t think this means Albert Pujols or Prince Fielder. Maybe this means bringing Carlos Beltran back, or perhaps getting a legit shortstop/leadoff hitter in Jose Reyes or Jimmy Rollins?

Highlights from Brian Sabean and Bruce Bochy‘s end of the year conference.
- Sabean says they have 13 arbitration eligible players and they’re not going to bring all of them back.
- The budget for the Giants in 2012 will be right around $124 million. Where the budget was when they ended the 2011 season.
- Jonathan Sanchez will be competing for the 5th spot in the rotation in Spring Training.
“Our pitching is going to get expensive, and that’s the punchline. We have to take care of that first,” Sabean on paying for pitching.
- Brandon Crawford is going to the Fall League, and Brandon Belt is going to the Dominican League.
- Sabean doesn’t think Hector Sanchez will be ready to backup Buster Posey at the start of the 2012 season.
- “He’s going to have to come in ready. He’s going to have to come in and pull more weight, and if he can’t as we’ve shown before. The manager is going to be in a position to have other choices. We will put in other people in there if need be,” Sabean on Aubrey Huff. Huff was told he might have to go to the outfield next year.
- Sabean says they’re not sure yet if Gary Brown will start in AA-Richmond or AAA-Fresno next season.
- Bochy says Nate Schierholtz should be the starting right fielder in 2012. “His job to lose now at this point in his career,” Bochy on Schierholtz.
- Sabean expects Jeremy Affeldt to be in a Giants uniform next year. He’s not sure if it’s going to be by the Giants using the team options, or re-signing Affeldt to a new contract.
- Justin Christian is seen as an extra man, and is not in the mix as the Giants leadoff hitter.
- Brett Pill may work on playing some outfield in winter ball or spring training.
- “It might be a luxury item at the price point. I’m not sure, but again we know he hits 2nd. We know he plays the position for some reason if (Freddy) Sanchez isn’t ready. It gives you good protection, or if something happens with Sanchez’s comeback. He also can play 3rd and can play 1st base. We like the bat,” Sabean on Jeff Keppinger.
