SF Giants Rumors: Hensley And Theriot Sign, Competition In Place For Bench Roles

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN say (via twitter) the San Francisco Giants have agreed to terms with reliever Clay Hensley. Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle (in a later tweet) confirmed the signing, and that the contract is non-guaranteed. Hensley has to win a job in Spring Training to crack the Opening Day roster.

There is a bullpen spot that could be Hensley’s since the Giants traded away Ramon Ramirez in the Angel Pagan trade. Giants fans might remember Hensley for a couple different reasons. He was drafted by the Giants in the 8th round of the 2002 draft and was traded to the Padres for Matt Herges in 2003. Fans might also remember Hensley as the pitcher that gave up Barry Bonds 755th career home run on August 4, 2007.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com says (via twitter) Ryan Theriot and the Giants have reached an agreement. It’s a 1-year deal for $1.25 million (non-guaranteed, like Hensley).

Theriot is coming in to add some infield depth and give manager Bruce Bochy some options at shortstop. Brandon Crawford should still be the Opening Day shortstop, but Bochy now has other options if Crawford has some early struggles. Theriot, Mike Fontenot and Manny (Emmanuel) Burriss will be competing for bench roles at Spring Training.

SF Giants Rumors: Giants Extend Sabean And Bochy’s Contracts

The San Francisco Giants said (via twitter) that they have extended the contracts for GM Brian Sabean and Manager Bruce Bochy through 2013 with a club option for 2014.

This extension makes sense to me, since they helped bring a World Series Championship to San Francisco!

SF Giants Rumors: Highlights From Brian Sabean And Bruce Bochy’s End Of The Year Conference

Highlights from Brian Sabean and Bruce Bochy‘s end of the year conference.

- Sabean says they have 13 arbitration eligible players and they’re not going to bring all of them back.

- The budget for the Giants in 2012 will be right around $124 million. Where the budget was when they ended the 2011 season.

- Jonathan Sanchez will be competing for the 5th spot in the rotation in Spring Training.

“Our pitching is going to get expensive, and that’s the punchline. We have to take care of that first,” Sabean on paying for pitching.

- Brandon Crawford is going to the Fall League, and Brandon Belt is going to the Dominican League.

- Sabean doesn’t think Hector Sanchez will be ready to backup Buster Posey at the start of the 2012 season.

- “He’s going to have to come in ready. He’s going to have to come in and pull more weight, and if he can’t as we’ve shown before. The manager is going to be in a position to have other choices. We will put in other people in there if need be,” Sabean on Aubrey Huff. Huff was told he might have to go to the outfield next year.

- Sabean says they’re not sure yet if Gary Brown will start in AA-Richmond or AAA-Fresno next season.

- Bochy says Nate Schierholtz should be the starting right fielder in 2012. “His job to lose now at this point in his career,” Bochy on Schierholtz.

- Sabean expects Jeremy Affeldt to be in a Giants uniform next year. He’s not sure if it’s going to be by the Giants using the team options, or re-signing Affeldt to a new contract.

- Justin Christian is seen as an extra man, and is not in the mix as the Giants leadoff hitter.

- Brett Pill may work on playing some outfield in winter ball or spring training.

- “It might be a luxury item at the price point. I’m not sure, but again we know he hits 2nd. We know he plays the position for some reason if (Freddy) Sanchez isn’t ready. It gives you good protection, or if something happens with Sanchez’s comeback. He also can play 3rd and can play 1st base. We like the bat,” Sabean on Jeff Keppinger.

Henry Schulman said (via twitter) that Carlos Beltran said he’ll give the San Francisco Giants first crack to try to re-sign him. Once the World Series ends, Giants will have 5 days of exclusive negotiating rights to try to sign him before all the other teams can jump in the mix. It’s not likely that Beltran would re-sign that fast. I’m sure it’s going to be a long process, so he can see all his offers on the table from other teams.

Bruce Bochy pulled Beltran out after going 0-for-2 in the final game, so his batting average for the season wouldn’t drop below .300.

“I talked to Carlos last night. I got you covered. I’m not going to let you get under .300,” Bochy said on Beltran’s batting average.

Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News says Cody Ross was named the recipient of the Bill Rigney Good Guy award, given annually to a Giants player for cooperation with the media. Ross smiled as he accepted the small crystal award.
“Aw, thanks,” Ross said. “It’ll go right next to my (NLCS) MVP trophy.”

Baggarly also says that Pat Burrell will give his chronic foot strain a month to improve this winter before making any retirement decisions. Burrell said he would return only to the Giants.

SF Giants Rumors: Pat The Bat Playing His Final Game

Today is game 162 for the San Francisco Giants. It’s the last time they can wear the World Series patch on their sleeve. It’s also probably the last time Pat Burrell will see action as a player on the field.

Burrell has an injured right foot that can’t be repaired by surgery, so his 11 year major league career is likely coming to an end today.

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle says Bruce Bochy is giving Burrell the start today, so he can get his final chance to feel the thrill of the grass.

“It’s been incredible,” Burrell said of his two season in San Francisco. “I don’t know what the future holds. Who knows? Maybe there will be a miracle-type healing situation where I can give it one more shot. If not, I’d like to go back out there one more time.”

SF Giants Rumors: Just takes a Pill to get the bats going!

Welcome to the big leagues Brett Pill. For those of you that missed the game last night. Pill hit a 2-run BOMB in his first big league at-bat. The last Giants player to do that was Will (The Thrill) Clark back on 4/8/86.

Pill hit 25 homers for the Fresno Grizzlies this year, and is showing that he has the power potential to do it at the big league level. The Giants should trot him out to first base and see what the kid can do.

We have seen Aubrey Huff struggle for most of the year, and if he continues to do so next year. The Giants may want to give Pill the job at first base, and leave Brandon Belt in left field. It’s a good way to get some good young bats in the lineup.

It’s just something that Brian Sabean and Bruce Bochy should start considering if they want to find a way to jump start the offense with some young talent from the farm system. What’s your thoughts?

SF Giants Rumors: Beltran’s Back, Belt Belongs, Rehab Watch, Honorees

Welcome back Carlos Beltran (2-for-4 night)! With the big fella Barry Bonds in the house. Beltran showed that he can take it out over the right field wall as well. That’s Beltran’s first homer as a Giant, and it’s also his first career homer at AT&T Park.

Beltran said he will likely not be a 100% at all this season, but this guy sure can help us win at whatever percent he was last night!

“It’s great to have him back. His presence is nice to have in the lineup. It helps lengthen the lineup. For him to hit a home run first time back is pretty impressive. I thought it would take him a few games to get his timing down,” Bruce Bochy on Beltran.

Brandon Belt is playing like a guy that refuses to go back to Fresno. Belt went 2-for-3 with his first Major League triple. Belt was showing his leg speed by also stealing a base. Having Belt, Beltran and Pablo Sandoval in the lineup gives the Giants more chances to drive in some runs.

“He’s driving the ball. He’s going to hit a lot of triples, cause he can run. He has good gap power, and he’s going to hit some home runs. I do see him getting better, and better,” Bochy on Belt.

Rehab Watch

Pat Burrell played last night for the San Jose Giants, and went 2-for-4 with an RBI. You will not see Burrell back with the Giants till the rosters expand on September 1st.

Andres Torres is eligible to come off the DL on Saturday. He’s been tearing it up for the Fresno Grizzlies. In his last 5 games, Torres is 8-for-22 (.363 AVG) with 6 RBI and a homer. Let’s hope he can bring this bat to the top of the Giants lineup when he returns.

Honorees

Jason Schmidt and Marvin Benard will be added to the Giants Wall of Fame in a pregame ceremony Saturday. The honor goes to retired Giants with at least nine seasons or five seasons with at least one All-Star selection.

The San Francisco Giants showed some heart last night by coming back from a 5-2 deficit. Hector Sanchez got his first Major League hit and RBI. The G-Men did go on to lose the game in the 9th.

It’s still not time to hit the panic button. Last year at this time the Giants were 6 1/2 games back of the Padres. Right now they’re just 2 back of the Diamondbacks, and they still have 6 games left with them.

Aaron Rowand had a couple of chances last night to get back in the good graces of Giants fans, but he didn’t take advantage of his opportunities. He did however manage to get the fans to boo him. That’s what happens when you ground out with bases loaded and then pop up in the infield with a runner on 3rd base and 1 out. I’m just saying…

“He came up with men on base, it’s frustrating. Not just for us, for the fans. We know it,” Bruce Bochy‘s thoughts on Rowand getting loud boos.

Giants Claim Bell

The Giants have claimed Heath Bell off waivers from the Padres, but it’s very unlikely that the Padres would deal him to the Giants. Bell will be a free agent at the end of the year, but I’m sure the Padres are going to want a lot in return for Bell. There is a 48-hour window for the Giants and Padres to make a deal. My guess is Bell will remain with the Padres for the rest of the year.

Word On The Street

Word on the street is the big fella (Barry Bonds) is going to be at the game tonight. I’m thinking maybe the Giants should put a uniform on him and bat him 4th. I’m just saying…

Foot Fracture

Nate Schierholtz has a foot fracture, but will continue to play on it.

“He’s going to need a little time. I think we can get by, maybe he’s available to pinch hit. He was running pretty good with the hairline fracture,” Bochy on Schierholtz.

SF Giants Rumors: Belt’s Breakout Game, Player Injuries

Have a game Brandon Belt! Belt had a career high four hit game, and one of them was a 3-Run BOMB!

I know I’m not the only one that thinks Bruce Bochy needs to play Belt more. We have a lot of slumping players, and I don’t think they should just keep getting trotted out their cause they’re veterans. It’s time to let Belt show you what he can do on an everyday basis.

The Giants made a move this weekend by placing closer Brian Wilson on the DL, and bringing up Steve Edlefsen. Edlefsen made his MLB Debut yesterday, and got the Giants out of BIG jam! He pitched 1.1 innings and had 2 strikeouts. Edlefsen retired all four hitters that he faced.

There was a total of 11 players hurt during this road trip and 5 of them had to take a trip to the DL.

SF Giants Rumors: Bumgarner Ready To Dominate, Injury Update!

The San Francisco Giants continue their road trip as they stop in Atlanta for four games with the Braves. The G-Men need their pitching to dominate in case their offense decides to takes a night off. Madison Bumgarner takes the mound tonight and hopes to push this winning streak to three games. Bumgarner has the 2nd lowest ERA on the road since April 27 (2.48). The Giants overall have the 2nd best team ERA (3.15) behind the Phillies and just ahead of the Braves.

Injury Update

Giants closer Brian Wilson has a stiff back, but is available in the bullpen tonight. The game was on the line yesterday, and the Giants pen (Wilson-less) was able to handle business!

Sergio Romo has an active streak of 13 scoreless innings pitched. He didn’t get a chance to extend the streak yesterday in Florida due to a sore right elbow. Romo could possibly be headed to the DL.

Carlos Beltran is not in today’s starting lineup against the Braves (7 straight games), and is likely to be headed to the DL. Beltran seems to be swinging fine from the right side, but feels the pain when he takes left-handed swings. Bruce Bochy is okay with the team playing a man shot at this time. Decision on Beltran is expected tomorrow.

Andres Torres has a right leg contusion and is on the 15-day DL. That’s how Brandon Belt made his way back to the Giants roster. He seized the opportunity by hitting 2 homers against the Marlins yesterday.

Barry Zito seems to really have injured himself pitching a rehab game for the Fresno Grizzlies. It’s an ankle injury (x-rays negative), but it’s not likely that Zito will be pitching anytime soon.
