SF Giants Rumors: Vogelsong Not Concerned With Offense, Main Goal Right Now Is To Prove 2011 Wasn’t A Fluke

Rael Enteen of CSNBayArea.com says Ryan Vogelsong isn’t concerned about the San Francisco Giants offense heading into the 2012 season.

“Not concerned at all. We’re getting two really good players back from injury (Buster Posey, Freddy Sanchez) so it’s almost like we signed two free agents,” said Vogelsong.

Vogelsong is going to be the number four starting pitcher in the Giants rotation. He’s coming off a spectacular 2011 season, and this is what Vogelsong said when asked about proving that 2011 wasn’t a fluke and it was legit.

“That’s the main goal right now. I’d be lying if I said it was different then that because it’s not. I know that as soon as I take one bad step or have a bad game. That’s what’s going to be said and I’m going to have to try to keep that down to a minimum and put up as many quality starts up as I can,” said Vogelsong.

SF Giants Rumors: Wilson, Sanchez and Posey

Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News gives some insights on a few players. Baggarly said closer Brian Wilson arrived in Arizona last week to get a jump on his throwing program. In the next few days he’s expected to throw off a mound for the first time since the San Francisco Giants shut him down because of recurring elbow soreness last season.

The injury did not require surgery, so the Giants are hoping the time off will help his cranky elbow. Wilson shouldn’t have any restrictions during Spring Training.

Freddy Sanchez has made steady progress with his surgically-repaired right shoulder, and will start making throws to bases next week. Hitting hasn’t been a problem for Sanchez since he started swinging the bat this offseason.

Everything is pointing in the right direction for a healthy Sanchez at the start of the 2012 season. Sanchez is in a contract year, and he’s a guy that puts everything out on the field at all times. I expect him to have a solid year if he can avoid the injury bug.

Buster Posey will be in Arizona on January 31 for a few days of rehab before attending FanFest at AT&T Park on February 4th. It’s a guessing game for everyone right now to see how Posey will be behind the plate until he’s put in some games in Spring Training. The Giants are sure looking forward to seeing Posey back in the middle of the lineup in 2012. Your teams offense sure did miss you in 2011!

SF Giants Rumors: Is Pablo Sandoval An Elite National League Hitter?

Chris Haft of MLB.com says it’s easy to envision Pablo Sandoval becoming one of the National League’s elite hitters. However, Sandoval can’t vault into baseball’s upper echelon by himself. Sandoval needs a consistent, effective complement in the lineup to prevent teams from pitching around him or prevent himself from trying to do too much.

Haft also points out that Sandoval hit .329 with 12 homers and 32 RBIs with Carlos Beltran hitting ahead of him (final two months). Prior to Beltran joining the Giants. Sandoval was hitting .304 with 11 homers and 38 RBIs.

Now that Beltran isn’t returning to the Giants. Who’s going to fill that void and take some pressure off of Sandoval? The San Francisco Giants have a lot of hope going into 2012, so it’s really a guessing game for now.

They hope Buster Posey and Freddy Sanchez will be healthy. They hope Brandon Belt will overcome his struggles, and Aubrey Huff will have a bounce back year since he’s reportedly in better shape.

Sandoval is a career .307 hitter with 64 homers. Do you see Sandoval staying consistent and becoming an elite hitter in the National League for years to come?

SF Giants Rumors: Chris Haft Chimes In On 2012 Offense

Chris Haft of MLB.com tells SF Giants Rumors that he sees Melky Cabrera and Angel Pagan as assets overall, but thinks the offensive help they’ll provide will be only incremental. He says the San Francisco Giants are hoping both players will be motivated to have big years because they’re heading into free agency.

Haft does believe the Giants can have a decent lineup if Buster Posey and Freddy Sanchez return healthy and effective. Aubrey Huff will also have to rebound or Brandon Belt and Nate Schierholtz take quantum steps forward.

SF Giants Rumors: Freddy Sanchez Says Shoulder Is Coming Along Great

Happy Birthday Freddy Sanchez! The San Francisco Giants second baseman is confident he’ll be ready for Opening Day, according to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle.

“I’m doing great. I’m throwing. I’m out to 60 feet now, and the shoulder’s coming along great,” said Sanchez.

When Buster Posey went down the Giants were still able to battle and win some games, but when Sanchez went down. It was pretty much a done deal for the 2011 season. It’s going to be nice to see them both healthy and back in the lineup for the 2012 season!

With no big free agent signings. The Giants are going to need everyone to be healthy and have good years.

SF Giants Rumors: No Beltran Or Ross, Keppinger And Fontenot On The Bubble

I’m sure you have already heard that the San Francisco Giants budget is tapped out for the 2012 season. Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News says GM Brian Sabean has eliminated any possibility of re-signing Carlos Beltran or Cody Ross.

“Being brutally honest, we pretty much got to the top of the budget,” said Sabean.

Sabean also said it’s down to Jeff Keppinger and Mike Fontenot as the extra man on the roster. Both guys are good players to have on the team, but if Freddy Sanchez goes down again. It would be nice to plug in Keppinger as the everyday second baseman if needed.

What’s your thoughts on the door now closed for Beltran/Ross and who do you want as the extra man?

SF Giants Rumors: Missing Bat In The Giants Lineup

Bruce Jenkins of the San Francisco Chronicle says the Giants are one bat shy of regaining their dominance in the NL West. Jenkins believes a two or three year deal with Carlos Beltran would do the trick.

Jenkins also points out if the Giants get Buster Posey, Freddy Sanchez and Pablo Sandoval in good health for a full year, that’s the equivalent of three major acquisitions. Adding Melky Cabrera to that mix is a bonus as well.

There’s a lot of fans that are on the fence with Beltran. Some want him back and others hope the Giants don’t re-sign him. Beltran can flat out hit and seeing him in the lineup with the other guys is going to make the Giants lineup that must stronger. The Giants should only sign him if it’s the right deal for them. That’s why a two-three year deal would be perfect. Anything more than that wouldn’t be in our teams best interest for the long haul.

SF Giants Rumors: Beltran, Crawford, Crisp, Sizemore And Brown Update

John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle says the San Francisco Giants need to sign outfielder Carlos Beltran. He’s the fourth best hitter in the free agent market.

Shea believes the Giants can go with Brandon Crawford at shortstop with Beltran, Buster Posey, Freddy Sanchez and a in-shape Aubrey Huff in the lineup. Let’s not forget about Pablo Sandoval either!

Now for the centerfield postion. Shea thinks Coco Crisp seems doable unless Brian Sabean sees a comeback story in Grady Sizemore.

Gary Brown Update

Henry Schulman said (via twitter) that the Giants are shutting down Gary Brown from playing in the AFL. Brown got a nasty virus and is still recovering. The Giants think he’s fatigued from his first full season and playing winter ball.

SF Giants Rumors: Highlights From Urban’s 1-on-1 With Sabean

Mychael Urban of CSNBayArea.com was able to chat with Giants GM Brian Sabean. Below is the highlights of the phone interview.

Sabean is in Arizona for organizational meetings. They started meetings the day after the season ended. Sabean stresses that it’s about roster management right now.

“Including who you may just be willing to take off the roster, cause you have younger kids to put on,” says Sabean.

With the 13 arbitration eligible players and 8 free agents. Sabean says the payroll will go up incrementally and not dramatically.

When asked about if he would be interested in trading any of the starting pitching. Sabean said, “I think were open to anything as you go forward, you have to be.”

Brandon Crawford has done a good job of making adjustments and had some good at-bats. “His batting average, he’s earned down here,” Sabean on Crawford.

Gary Brown has played real nice in the outfield and is showing some signs of fatigue. He has had some nice at-bats though.

Joe Panik hasn’t played 2nd base since high school, and is playing 2nd in the Arizona Fall League. They have him playing in the AFL to get him some higher level at-bats.

Freddy Sanchez will start throwing around December 1st. “The goal is to have him ready for Opening Day,” Sabean on Sanchez.

Buster Posey has been on the field hitting 3 days a week, and catching bullpens off the pitching machine. Posey’s swing is still the same, so that’s the good news Giants fans.

“He’s taking everything they’re throwing at him, and coming through with flying colors,” Sabean on Posey’s rehab.

SF Giants Rumors: Free Agent Predictions

John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle has shared his thoughts about some big free agents and their possible destinations.

Shea believes the top prize of the free agent class (Albert Pujols) will return to the Cardinals. All the big teams with money are already committed to their big name first baseman’s (Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies). If for some reason Pujols doesn’t re-sign with the Cardinals. Shea believes he will sign with the Cubs, and the San Francisco Giants would be a long shot.

The next big slugger in the free agent market is Prince Fielder and Shea (along with everyone else) thinks it’s a slim to none chance that Fielder will re-sign with the Brewers. Shea thinks the Nationals will be a team that could possibly land the big slugger, and the long shot team is the Orioles. It’s only Shea’s opinion so no need to panic Giants fans. There is still a chance the Giants could shock us, and sign the big lefty bat.

Jose Reyes is next on the list, and Shea believes there is a medium chance of Reyes re-signing with the Mets. If he goes elsewhere, Shea thinks it will be to the Red Sox, and the long shot team would be the Nationals. He doesn’t have the Giants in the mix for Reyes.

Now on to Oakland native Jimmy Rollins. Shea says the odds of him returning to the Phillies are high. If he does however end up moving on, the Giants may end up being his new team. The long shot team is the Braves.

Carlos Beltran showed he can still swing it for the Giants. It would be nice to see what he can do with Buster Posey and Freddy Sanchez also in the lineup. Shea says odds of Beltran returning are medium. If he signs elsewhere, it will likely be and American League team, to make use of the designated-hitter rule.

Another name Shea links to the Giants is from across the bay, Coco Crisp. The chances of Crisp returning to the A’s are low, and the Giants need a leadoff hitter, so Shea thinks there is a good chance he could end up a Giant. The long shot team to land Crisp is the Marlins.

Lets not forget the 2010 National League Championship MVP Cody Ross. Ross has low odds of returning to the Giants, says Shea. He’s likely on his way out and a team that can land him might be the Mets. The long shot team is the Twins. If Ross hit the free agent market after last year. He would have had a lot of teams in the mix for his services, but we all know it’s a year too late.
