SF Giants Rumors – Giants in Strong Pursuit of Uggla

Posted on November 11th, 2009 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com say the Giants and Orioles are the clubs in strongest pursuit of Dan Uggla, according to major-league sources.

Uggla, 29, projects to earn approximately $8 million in arbitration. In four major-league seasons, he has averaged 30 homers and 90 RBI’s.

For the Giants, he would represent a more affordable addition than Jason Bay or Matt Holliday. The Giants would play Uggla at third, Edgar Renteria at shortstop, Freddy Sanchez at second and Pablo Sandoval at first.

SF Giants Rumors – Zito to the Brewers?

Posted on November 11th, 2009 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune says the Giants, who were rumored to be interested in dealing either Aaron Rowand or Barry Zito, aren’t willing to do a “bad contracts” swap for Bradley.

Ben Maller of Foxsports.com says he’s hearing Milwaukee would take Zito, if the Giants pay most of his salary. Rick Peterson is Zito’s former pitching coach in the Cy Young Oakland days.

SF Giants Rumors – Are Giants Going To Be Big Spenders? Bay, Holliday, Penny

Posted on November 10th, 2009 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

Joel Sherman of the New York Post says the Giants have some flexibility to pursue help for it’s woeful lineup because Pablo Sandoval could play first or third base and recently re-signed Freddy Sanchez could play second or third.

Sherman said a team insider says payroll will be in the $90 million range and would leave the Giants from landing Jason Bay or Matt Holliday. Officials from other teams expect the Giants to be players on the two big free agents.

Sherman also says the Giants would like to bring back Brad Penny back on a one-year contract to pitch behind Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain and Barry Zito.

SF Giants Rumors – Catching Options, Pudge?

Posted on November 10th, 2009 by admin in SF Giants Rumors
Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News reports that Bengie Molina is a Type A free agent, which means the Giants would get tow draft picks if they offer him arbitration and he signs elsewhere.

The Giants are open to bringing Molina back on a one-year contract but probably not for anything more than the $6 million he made last season.

Molina does want a multi-year deal and thinks he should get a raise, so he’s likely to sign elsewhere.

The Rumors floating out there that the Mets are considering Molina and another unnamed AL team might get involved as well.

If the Giants don’t re-sign Molina, they’re expected to bring in a veteran to buy time for Buster Posey and mentor the rookie. Pudge Rodriguez sure seems like a fit says Baggarly in his blog. The Giants have also tried to acquire him a couple times in recent years. King of Cali thoughts – I think bringing in someone like Pudge would be a good move. He would be a great person for Posey to learn from.

The What Ifs that we know…. Cain for Fielder (part 2)

Posted on November 10th, 2009 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

What If that we know Part 2 Cain for Fielder
By Darrin Reyes

Matt Cain for Prince Fielder
Comparing contracts. Matt Cain is signed until next year for 4.25 Mil with a club option for 2011 for 6.25 mil. Prince Fielder is signed until 2010 and will be making 10.5 Mil for the Brewers. The Giants should be willing to take the additional payroll for a player that is well worth the amount. Agreeing to pay the extra amount should be fine with all the extra money coming off the Giants payroll in 2010.

Giants need a big bat desperately but is it worth the cost of losing one of their big arms? Prince Fielder is ahead of every Giant in all category except for Pablo Sandoval’s batting average and total hits.

How the Numbers compare
In 2009 Fielder had 46 Hrs, 141 RBIs, 103 Runs, 110 BBs and 138 SOs.

Bengie Molina 20 HRs +Pablo Sandoval 25 HR would match up to Fielder’s 46 HR
Bengie Molina 80 RBI + Aaron Rowand 64 RBI exceeds Fielder’s 141 RBIs
No one on Giants had over 80 Runs in 2009
Bengie Molina 52 Runs + Juan Uribe 52 Runs would be behind Fielder’s 103 Runs
Randy Winn 47 BB + Edgar Renteria 39 BB + Juan Uribe 25 BB barely passes Fielder’s 110 BB
Prince had 138 SOs in 2009 and only Aaron Rowand had over 100 SOs last year.
The input of Fielder would give an instant surge to the Giants line up. The home runs increase would be great but I believe that the bigger stats that he would bring to the Giants are the RBIs and the walks. The Giants players are a bunch of table setting players and they really don’t have anyone that can close the deal. Last year the Giants got shut down over 2 dozens times with no runs when they had bases loaded with no outs. Most Giants fan still have nightmares about this true story. Prince Fielder had 51 RBIs more than Pablo Sandoval last year. Looking back, that many additional runs could have given the Giants more than 10 more wins. If the Giants had that many more wins they would’ve made the playoffs and led the National League in wins.

Matt Cain had his best year in 2009 with 14 wins and a 2.89 ERA. His numbers do validate his worth for the trade to be a possibility for the Brewers. He would be among the leaders on Brewers if on there staff. If the Giants sign Brad Penny it could increase the possibility of putting Matt Cain on the trading block. The Giants do have a few good young arms to add to their rotation in case of a trade.

Projected Line up with Fielder (with current Giants roster)
Velez LF
Sanchez 2B
Sandoval 3B
Fielder 1B
Schierholtz RF
Molina C     (if resigned)
Rowand CF
Renteria SS

Villalona Out On Bail – Victims Family To Drop Charges

Posted on November 9th, 2009 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News just reported on his blog that Angel Villalona is on on bail and the victim’s family wishes to drop the charges.

The rumors are that Villalona, who received a $2.1 million bonus from the Giants as a 16 year-old, paid $150,000 to the family of the slain man.

Villalona still faces as much as 20 years in prison if found guilty, but we’ll see if there are any witnesses remaining when and if the case goes to trial. We’ll also have to see what the Giants officials plan to do if Villalona is freed.

SF Giants Rumors – Wagner Mateo, Angel Villalona

Posted on November 9th, 2009 by admin in SF Giants Rumors
San Francisco Giants beat writer Andrew Baggarly posted on his “Extra Baggs” blog that the rumors have been going around that the Giants are close to signing Wagner Mateo. Baggarly says his sources are telling him the Giants are keeping tabs on the situation, but they are a long way from an agreement and don’t necessarily expect to reach one.

Baggarly also reported that three witnesses will testify that Giants prospect Angel Villalona was the trigger-man in the fatal shooting of a bar patron on Sept. 19th. That is no new information, but nothing more recent hasn’t come out of the Dominican media over the past month. No trial date has been set yet.

Enrique Rojas did say via twitter that Angel Villalona has been released. I haven’t been able to locate anything official to back this up.

SF Giants Rumors – Jason Bay to Mets, Mariners or Giants?

Posted on November 6th, 2009 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

Michael Silverman of  Boston Herald says the Red Sox are believed to have discussed only a three-year deal for Jason Bay. The word is that Bay is looking for at least a four, or preferably five year contract. The length of the contract is expected to be a bigger issue for the Sox than the price-tag, which likely will fall between $16-18 million per season.

Other teams expected to pursue Bay include the Mets, Mariners and Giants.

Side Notes- It was reported yesterday that Tim Lincecum was busted for speeding and he also had marijuana on him. Lincecum is facing a misdemeanor possession charge.

SF Giants Rumors – Molina, Penny, Uribe

Posted on November 5th, 2009 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

Chris Haft of MLB.com says Brian Sabean might chart a new course by taking a “wait-and-see” approach toward players on the market.

Today began the 15-day period during which eligible players can file for free agency. Haft believes Bengie Molina, Brad Penny and Juan Uribe could be among the most highly sought performers at their respective positions once bidding expands to all Major League teams on Nov. 20th.

Molina is believed to be seeking another multi-year deal. The Giants appreciate Molina’s contributions but are unlikely to offer him that kind of contract. Top prospect Buster Posey could be ready for everyday duty behind the plate by 2011 at the latest.

Haft says Penny probably pitched his way into a handsome contract by posting a 4-1 record with a 2.59 ERA in six starts after the Red Sox released him.

Uribe carried San Francisco’s offense in the season’s second half, heightening his value as a utillity man. He hit .289 with 16 homers and 55 RBI’s, garnished by a .347 September batting average as the Giants attempted to stay in the postseason contention.

It’s not likely the Giants will sign all three. And they’ll need to reinforce their roster if any of them depart.

Losing Penny probably would eliminate any chance that the Giants would trade one of their prized starting pitchers for hitting help.
