SF Giants Rumors: Matt Cain To Sign, Or To Test The Market?

Posted on March 6th, 2012 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com says pitcher Matt Cain and the San Francisco Giants have reached some common ground in recent weeks. Cain will be a free agent after this season, and the Giants are looking to try to extend him prior to the start of this season.

Cain does want to stay in San Francisco, but he’s not looking to give the Giants a hometown discount. Jon Heyman says (via twitter) there is no shot that Cain will sign for less than $100 million.

Do you think Cain will resign with the Giants prior to the start of the season, or will he hold out to test the free agent market?

SF Giants Rumors: More Nuggets, Sit Down Session With Bochy And Sabean

Posted on February 7th, 2012 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

The Freak, Tim Lincecum at Giants Media Day (2012).Here are more nuggets from the sit down session with San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy and GM Brian Sabean at Giants Media Day. I had a chance to ask Bochy who would be plan B if closer Brian Wilson can’t go at the start of the season. Bochy said you can start with Sergio Romo and Javier Lopez. He also said everyone in the bullpen can move up a spot.

“It’s nice to have a luxury of having five or six guys who aren’t afraid to pitch in that ninth inning,” said Bochy.

Sabean also chimed in on their ace pitcher Tim Lincecum.

“Timmy likes San Francisco. He’s been treated very well here. He’s been compensated very well along the whole way. As it turns out, I think it was a win-win to get these two years out of the way. To kind of give us a base-line for how we can go forward,” said Sabean.

“Our budget can hold both Lincecum and Cain (Matt Cain), and try to get more offense in here,” said Sabean.

I asked Sabean if the Ryan Theriot signing means Brandon Crawford would be on a shorter leash.

“I don’t think so. We all want Crawford to be the shortstop going into Spring Training. No matter really what kind of Spring Training he has. We think he’s that talented with the glove,” said Sabean.

SF Giants Rumors: Cain Deal Could Be In The Works, Pill Could Land Last Roster Spot

Posted on February 2nd, 2012 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

Chris Haft of MLB.com answers fans questions in his inbox article. Haft expects Matt Cain and the San Francisco Giants to reach a deal during Spring Training.

This would put a lot of Giants fans at ease since Tim Lincecum is in a two-year deal, and Giants fans wouldn’t be able to stomach the possibility of losing both pitchers to free agency. There is still two years to convince Lincecum that San Francisco is where he belongs.

When asked about Conor Gillaspie, Brett Pill and Justin Christian fighting for one of the last spots on the roster. Haft believes Pill has the best chance among this trio of making the club, because the Giants might need an extra right-handed bat.

Pill showed us his power last season, and it’s nice to have some pop coming off the bench. If he can show consistency at the plate, he could even force the issue that he should be getting some starts at first base. Let’s see if the 2010 version of Aubrey Huff shows up to Spring Training, cause that would guarantee Pill’s playing time will be off the bench.

SF Giants Rumors: Giants Have Shown Interest In Cuban Pitcher Gerardo Concepcion

Posted on January 23rd, 2012 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com says there is ten teams that have shown interest in Cuban pitcher Gerardo Concepcion. The Rangers, Yankees, Cubs and White Sox have expressed the most interest, but the San Francisco Giants have also been a team that have shown some interest. Concepcion’s agent says he has an offer on the table and is expected to sign a Major League contract within the next two weeks.

There hasn’t been any speculation that the Giants have made any contract offers, and I don’t see them making a run at him with ace Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain still on the front burner.

SF Giants Rumors: Lincecum, Cain, And Let The Money Rain

Posted on January 23rd, 2012 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com says the San Francisco Giants made a $100 million offer to Tim Lincecum for fiver years. Lincecum rejected the offer, and the Giants are now focusing on a two-year or one-year deal.

The Giants and Lincecum don’t seem to be far apart on a one-year, or two-year deal. I don’t believe they will take this to an arbitration hearing. Some fans on SF Giants Rumors Facebook are saying Lincecum is being greedy, and other fans are saying just give him the salary he submitted for arbitration. They say just give him what he wants to keep him happy, and maybe that will keep him from bolting to New York when he’s a free agent.

Heyman also says baseball people believe Matt Cain might be able to match Cliff Lee‘s $120 million if he decides to test the free agent market. However, word on the street is that Cain really wants to stay in San Francisco. Which means he could just be asking the Giants to offer him a fair market deal, and they won’t have to try to outbid other teams to retain Cain’s services.

What’s your thoughts on Lincecum and Cain being long term Giants?

SF Giants Rumors: Matt Cain Contract, Strong Defense

Posted on December 9th, 2011 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

GM Brian Sabean said the San Francisco Giants top priority this offseason is to keep their pitching intact. Matt Cain is in the final year of his contract, and the Giants are hoping to lock him up.

Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News says the six-year, $99 million offer C.J. Wilson left on the table from the Marlins will provide a baseline for negotiations with Cain.

Baggarly points out that the Giants pitchers are winners after the winter meetings. They will have a speedy outfield with Melky Cabrera, Angel Pagan and Nate Schierholtz in the outfield (if they all play at the same time). Let’s also not forget about the  upgraded defensive shortstop in Brandon Crawford. Sounds like some really good defense to help a very good pitching staff.

Side Note

I hate to put a negative spin on the Pagan trade, but Baggarly says Pagan is an .069 hitter at AT&T Park. He’s 2-for-29 in 9 games. However, one of his hits was a clutch, two-run homer off Ryan Vogelsong that gave the Mets the lead in a game on July 8th.

SF Giants Rumors: Free Agents, Trades, Payroll, Lincecum and Cain

Posted on November 30th, 2011 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports there will be no big splash additions for the San Francisco Giants and the 2012 payroll will be $130 million.

Giants GM Brian Sabean will be in Dallas next week for the winter meetings, and is open to trades and free agency.

“There won’t be a big splash,” said Sabean.

VP of Baseball Operations, Bobby Evans said he has engaged in preliminary talks with Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain‘s agents. They have had some conversations about numbers and exchanged ideas.

SF Giants Rumors: Matt Cain and Ryan Vogelsong Rumors

Posted on November 28th, 2011 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

Here is a rumor that I thought I would pass along. I’m not sure how much credibility there really is to this rumor, but figured I would let you decide for yourself.

Frank Russo of Mike Silva’s NY Baseball Digest says the Yankees recently contacted the San Francisco Giants and offered four players for pitcher Matt Cain.

Some of the names tossed around were Jesus Montero, Nick Swisher and some minor league players.

Once again I’m not sure how credible this site is, but fans that leave comments on that site seem to believe them, and say another major source will probably drop this same story shortly. Just thought I would pass it along to you.

Mychael Urban says on his site (Urbs Unchained) that a reliable source told him that the Giants have had discussions with right-hander Ryan Vogelsong‘s camp regarding a contract for 2012 – and beyond. Vogelsong is an arbitration eligible player, so he’s not going anywhere. The key to this rumors is the Giants are trying to lock him up for a multi-year deal now.

What’s your thoughts on the Yankees trying to snag Shotgun Cain from the Giants and the G-Men trying to lock up Vogelsong?

SF Giants Rumors: Giants Want to Lock Up Cain And Lincecum For Four Years

Posted on November 16th, 2011 by admin in SF Giants Rumors

Jon Heyman of SI.com says (via twitter) Larry Baer has said the San Francisco Giants are also trying to lock up starting pitcher Matt Cain as well as Tim Lincecum. The team is looking to to try to get four year deals.

Cain will be a free agent after the 2012 season, and Lincecum will not be eligible to be a free agent until after the 2013 season.

Does anyone remember the days when we all said “Lincecum and Cain then pray for rain”?
