SF Giants Rumors: Vogelsong Is Locked In

John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that that San Francisco Giants have inked pitcher Ryan Vogelsong to his first multi-year contract of his career.

Vogelsong and the Giants have agreed to a two-year, $8.3 million contract with a 2014 club option.

“Obviously, with the way my career was going, I never thought financial status like this would ever happen, so it is life-changing. Will it change me as a player? No,” said Vogelsong.

Vogelsong went 13-7 with a 2.71 ERA in 2011, and was a National League All Star.

Do you think Vogelsong can have another great season in 2012?

SF Giants Rumors: Whiteside Signed, Vizquel Would Sign With The Giants

John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle says (via twitter) the San Francisco Giants have signed catcher Eli Whiteside to a major league deal.

Whiteside will make $600K if he’s on the major league roster and $175K if he’s in the minors. It’s unknown where Whiteside will start the season with Buster Posey back, Hector Sanchez knocking on the door and Chris Stewart trying to make the squad.

Ex-Giant shortstop Omar Vizquel says he plans to play in 2012, and tells fans (via twitter) he would sign with the Giants if they offered a one-year deal.

The Giants are not going to sign Vizquel. He just answered a question from a fan, and said he would sign if they offered a 1-year deal. They’re not interested in bringing him back at this point in his career.

What’s your thoughts on Whiteside signing with the Giants and Vizquel’s tweet?

SF Giants Rumors: Fontenot vs. Keppinger, Whiteside Non-Tendered, Ex-Giants Sign

The verdict is out! The San Francisco Giants have decided to sign Mike Fontenot (1-year), and non-tender Jeff Keppinger.

From the comments left on SF Giants Rumors Facebook it sounds like a lot of fans wanted to see Keppinger back in a Giants uniform.

Keppinger came over to the Giants (July) from the Astros (traded for Henry Sosa and Jason Stoffel). He hit a combined .277 with a .300 OBP with the Giants and Astros.

The Giants have also decided to non-tender catcher Eli Whiteside. It’s likely the Giants will have Chris Stewart backup Buster Posey. The Grizzlies catcher will be Hector Sanchez, so Whiteside might have to accept a backup role in Fresno if he decides to re-sign with the Giants.

Ex-Giants On The Move

The Marlins have signed Aaron Rowand to a minor league deal, and the Brewers have signed Travis Ishikawa to a minor league deal as well.

SF Giants Rumors: Brian Wilson The Human Taxi

The TMZ.com team sent me a couple pictures of San Francisco Giants closer Brian Wilson during his routine jog. This time it wasn’t so routine though. Wilson had a human backpack on. He’s jogging with an unidentified female cargo on his back.

At least we know he’s keeping himself in good shape during the offseason. Let’s just hope his throwing arm (elbow) is getting better, since he was shutdown at the end of the season. Wilson is expected to start throwing again by January 1st.

SF Giants Rumors: Torres and Ramirez to New York for Pagan, Your Thoughts?

Just in case you missed it last night, cause your internet was down, and your cable was shut off. The San Francisco Giants have traded outfielder Andres Torres, and relief pitcher Ramon Ramirez to the Mets for outfielder Angel Pagan.

If the Giants were bringing Torres back it would have been to come off the bench or spot start here and there. Torres is a very nice guy and a great clubhouse guy, but the Giants could use him as a trading chip to upgrade the offense. Torres 2010 magic isn’t coming back, so it’s a good time for the Giants to move on.

Ramirez is the guy that I hate to see go. He’s a great guy to have in the bullpen, and was pretty reliable. My initial reaction to this trade was we packaged Ramirez and Torres for Pagan???

Now that I have had some time to digest the trade. The switch hitting outfielder Pagan hopefully solves the Giants leadoff problem. He’s coming off a down year with the stick. He hit .262 for the Mets and had 10 errors in the outfield. He’s known for throwing balls to the infield and missing his cut-off-man as well.

Flip Side

The flip side is Pagan has great speed, and had 32 stolen bases. He can get himself in scoring position for the heart of the Giants order. He will likely be playing center-field, and Melky Cabrera would move over to left-field.

SF Giants Rumors: Shortstop Hiroyuki Nakajima

Jon Paul Morosi of Fox Sports says (via twitter) sources tell him and Ken Rosenthal that the San Francisco Giants appear to have submitted a bid on shortstop Hiroyuki Nakajima.

John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle sent out a followup tweet saying the report that the Giants apparently submitted a bid on shortstop Nakajima is not accurate.

Nakajima hit .297/.354/.433 with 16 homers in 2011.

Brandon Crawford recently told me all the shortstop rumors don’t bother him. Here is another one to add to the shortstop rumors.

SF Giants Rumors: Heath Hembree, Brian Wilson and Carlos Beltran

Chris Haft of MLB.com says San Francisco Giants fans should keep an eye on prospect Heath Hembree. He generated plenty of excitement last season by amassing 38 saves and 78 strikeouts in 53 1/3 innings between San Jose and Richmond. Haft says Hembree can be a replacement for Closer Brian Wilson who will be extremely expensive next year when he’s arbitration eligible.

I’m sure a lot of Fear The Beard fans don’t want to hear that, but it’s something that the Giants might have to consider to try an keep this starting rotation intact. They would need to find ways to save money in other places.

Haft doesn’t see Carlos Beltran returning to the Giants. The price tag for Beltran is too high, and the sight of him walking gamely through the clubhouse with huge ice packs on each knee probably will prevent the Giants from offering more than a two-year deal.

I still believe the Giants need to add another bat. Beltran has a nice stick that would really help this offense if everyone was healthy for a full season. The Red Sox might offer Beltran a better deal than the Giants can, so everyday it’s looking less likely that Beltran will return to the Giants.

SF Giants Rumors: 40-man Roster Update

Chris Haft of MLB.com says the San Francisco Giants have added six players to the 40-man roster before Friday night’s deadline (Nov. 18). Players on the 40-man roster are protected from being taken in the Rule 5 Draft at the Winter Meetings on Dec. 8.

The Giants also removed two players from the 40-man roster. Outfielder Darren Ford and pitcher Waldis Joaquin were the odd men out, and were designated for assignment.

The six players added to the 40-man roster are pitchers Hector Correa, Dan Otero, infielder Charlie Culberson, and outfielders Tyler Graham and Roger Kieschnick. Yes, that’s only 5 players…

The sixth player added to the 40-man roster is Angel Villalona. The Giants have reinstated him to their farm system since the murder charges have been dropped. Villalona is only 21 years old with an above average bat and has raw power.

SF Giants Rumors: Giants Likely To Non-Tender Eli Whiteside

It’s not a crazy offseason for the Giants front office so far. They haven’t been actively pursuing top tier free agents, publicly anyways.

As of now we know of two players that aren’t coming back. Pat Burrell is likely headed to retirement because of his foot problems. Jonathan Sanchez has been traded for Melky Cabrera.

According to Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News, the Giants might be parting ways with catcher Eli Whiteside. Chris Stewart clearly brought more defensive skills to the table last year, and with a healthy Buster Posey coming back. All three catchers will not be needed on the roster.

SF Giants Rumors: Giants Want to Lock Up Cain And Lincecum For Four Years

Jon Heyman of SI.com says (via twitter) Larry Baer has said the San Francisco Giants are also trying to lock up starting pitcher Matt Cain as well as Tim Lincecum. The team is looking to to try to get four year deals.

Cain will be a free agent after the 2012 season, and Lincecum will not be eligible to be a free agent until after the 2013 season.

Does anyone remember the days when we all said “Lincecum and Cain then pray for rain”?
