John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle has shared his thoughts about some big free agents and their possible destinations. Shea believes the top prize of the free agent class (Albert Pujols) will return to the Cardinals. All the big teams with money are already committed to their big name first baseman’s (Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies). If for some reason Pujols doesn’t re-sign with the Cardinals. Shea believes he will sign with the Cubs, and the San Francisco Giants would be a long shot. The next big slugger in the free agent market is Prince Fielder and Shea (along with everyone else) thinks it’s a slim to none chance that Fielder will re-sign with the Brewers. Shea thinks the Nationals will be a team that could possibly land the big slugger, and the long shot team is the Orioles. It’s only Shea’s opinion so no need to panic Giants fans. There is still a chance the Giants could shock us, and sign the big lefty bat.
Jose Reyes is next on the list, and Shea believes there is a medium chance of Reyes re-signing with the Mets. If he goes elsewhere, Shea thinks it will be to the Red Sox, and the long shot team would be the Nationals. He doesn’t have the Giants in the mix for Reyes.
Now on to Oakland native Jimmy Rollins. Shea says the odds of him returning to the Phillies are high. If he does however end up moving on, the Giants may end up being his new team. The long shot team is the Braves.
Carlos Beltran showed he can still swing it for the Giants. It would be nice to see what he can do with Buster Posey and Freddy Sanchez also in the lineup. Shea says odds of Beltran returning are medium. If he signs elsewhere, it will likely be and American League team, to make use of the designated-hitter rule.
Another name Shea links to the Giants is from across the bay, Coco Crisp. The chances of Crisp returning to the A’s are low, and the Giants need a leadoff hitter, so Shea thinks there is a good chance he could end up a Giant. The long shot team to land Crisp is the Marlins.
Lets not forget the 2010 National League Championship MVP Cody Ross. Ross has low odds of returning to the Giants, says Shea. He’s likely on his way out and a team that can land him might be the Mets. The long shot team is the Twins. If Ross hit the free agent market after last year. He would have had a lot of teams in the mix for his services, but we all know it’s a year too late.
You may want to check out the article by Shea. He has other players that he mentions, but I didn’t put them in this post as they didn’t have any relations to the Giants at this time.

Cecil Fielder (Prince Fielder‘s dad) went on a radio show in Toronto (SportsNet 590, The Fan) with Jeff Blair. Fielder chimed in on his son hitting the free agent market. He believes Prince will stay in the National League. “With the Cubs doing what they did with Epstein, the Dodgers now getting themselves together, the San Francisco Giants getting themselves together cause they know they need some hitting,” Fielder on possible destinations for Prince. Fielder is not predicting any teams, but it’s nice to see the Giants mentioned in his speculations.
Prince Fielder’s 2011 Stats
G 162 AVG .299, HR 38, RBI 120, R 95, OBP .415
The Giants haven’t had a force like this in the lineup since Home Run King Barry Bonds. I would be on board for the Fielder signing. What’s your thoughts?

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle says Brian Sabean revealed to him that the 2012 payroll will be “in and around” $125 million, which means no increase over last year. That’s not breaking news, as we posted that here last week, but the new kicker is Sabean told him he could go to ownership and ask for more money based on a specific player they’re targeting. Let’s hope this means the Giants will try to make a splash. I still don’t think this means Albert Pujols or Prince Fielder. Maybe this means bringing Carlos Beltran back, or perhaps getting a legit shortstop/leadoff hitter in Jose Reyes or Jimmy Rollins? ~King of Cali (Steven)

Jayson Stark of ESPN.com says several executives this week think marquee free agents Albert Pujols will stay in St. Louis, Prince Fielder to the Nationals, and Jose Reyes will go to the San Francisco Giants. Reyes would be the perfect guy for the Giants to go out and get. He would fill the need for a shortstop and could be the leadoff hitter that the Giants have so desperately needed. Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News says “Ain’t no way Jose Reyes will consider signing with the Giants this winter.” Reyes 2011 Stats Thus Far
G 120, AVG .330, SB 36, R 97, RBI 39
Now tell me you wouldn’t like to see a guy with those numbers batting leadoff for your Giants? Just picture Freddy Sanchez, Buster Posey and Pablo Sandoval coming up with someone in scoring position… Sounds like a way to generate more runs for the Giants!

Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News says Carlos Beltran wants more offense from the San Francisco Giants. “I would consider this organization for sure, because the pitching is unbelievable, and adding those guys [Freddy Sanchez and Buster Posey] back, of course you’re adding more offense to the ballclub,” Beltran said. Baggarly says Beltran wasn’t lobbying for Prince Fielder or Albert Pujols. He’d rather see the Giants acquire a catalyst like Jose Reyes.
“You want to be in a lineup where you are around players that will make the lineup better, you understand?” Beltran said. “Right now we have missed a leadoff batter here, and that’s huge. That’s something to me, they should address that area before me.”
I would love to see Beltran back in a Giants uniform. Word on the street is Scott Boras (Beltran’s Agent) is going to want a five or six year deal for Beltran’s services. If that’s the case, it was nice to see you in a Giants uniform. There is no way the G-Men are going to give him that long of a contract, and I don’t see any other team going that many years for him.
I’m all in for a Beltran return for 2-to-3 years, but let’s not go beyond that. He has a sweet swing, and having him in the lineup with Posey, Sanchez, Sandoval and a legit leadoff hitter. That’s going to be a nice offense to watch score some runs. Do you want to see Beltran back in the Orange and Black?

The trading deadline has passed and the San Francisco Giants position players remain the same. I do have some mixed feelings about this years trading deadline. Giants GM Brian Sabean did get two relievers in Javier Lopez and Ramon Ramirez. Yes, he did get some much needed help to our bullpen. No, he didn’t get a bat with some power that everyone was expecting.
The Giants have been linked to multiple bats prior to the trading deadline. Name thrown out there like Corey Hart, Prince Fielder, Adam Dunn, Jose Bautista and the list goes on…
My gut feeling was if the Giants couldn’t pull off any big deals that they would at least fallback on Jose Guillen. He would be a rental player, but wouldn’t really cost the Giants much. Bob Dutton of The Kansas City Star told me (via email) the Giants could still get him. He can’t imagine Guillen getting claimed off waivers.
I really couldn’t believe that Sabean didn’t pull the trigger on any deals. He’s been saying the Giants need a power bat since last year and still hasn’t made it happen yet. The Padres and Dodger were able to upgrade their teams. Only time will tell how this trading deadline turns out for all teams. I guess let’s just be happy that the Giants are playing some really good ball right now!
I’m relieved that Sabean didn’t hit the panic button and make a dumb trade (right before the deadline) like giving up Madison Bumgarner for a rental player like Dunn. I do believe Sabean could have made a few moves without mortgaging the farm system, or giving away starting pitching. I just don’t like hearing that they couldn’t have done anything without giving up Jonathan Sanchez or Bumgarner. Other teams made trades and I didn’t see everyone giving up those kind of players.
The Giants may be in the mix for free agent slugger Carlos Delgado. Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com reports a couple of teams are showing interest. The Giants are among the teams that could be seeking additional offensive help.
Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle says a major league source said conversations with the Brewers about Corey Hart and Prince Fielder, were “dead in the water.”
The San Francisco Giants have asked the Nationals about Adam Dunn, but they would want Madison Bumgarner in return. Now that would make no sense to lose an up and coming star in Bumgarner for a rental in Dunn. I guess that means we can cross Dunn off the list for now.
Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times says Derrek Lee has been linked to the Rangers and Angels, but the Giants could be next in line after talks with the Brewers on Fielder have broke down.
I asked Chris Haft the Giants beat writer what he thought the Giants chances of landing Hart, Jose Bautista, Scott Podsednik, or rental players like Dunn, Jorge Cantu or Jose Guillen. Haft said he thinks they could have any of these guys right now if they wanted. It’s just a matter of whether they think the cost is worth it. The later they wait, the less they’ll have to give up (of course, then they run the risk of another team grabbing one of these guys).
The San Francisco Giants GM Brian Sabean was on with the Razor & Mr. T. Sabean said they would like to get someone who’s more than a rental player. The Giants are looking for someone that they won’t have to give away the farm for either. Sabean says a player that has something left on his contract or is arbitration eligible.
Sabean continues to say if they can find a bat they would like a left handed hitter. The Giants aren’t looking to trade starting pitching. He’s hoping to be able to make a deal using minor league prospects.
Which tells me the Giants are more than likely going to pass on Corey Hart(right-handed bat), Jose Guillen (rental/right-handed bat) and Adam Dunn (rental). They might still be in play for Prince Fielder, but I can’t see that deal happening without starting pitching being part of the deal. As we all know everything is speculation, but I’m pretty sure Sabean has something up his sleeve to make a trade before the trading deadline. His Giants GM life depends on it!
The first half of the season is over. I know it’s a little more than half the season since they have played 88 games. With 74 games left in the season the San Francisco Giants need to figure out exactly what they need to get them over the hump. A lot of rumors have surfaced lately with the trading deadline looming.
Giants GM Brian Sabean and his staff need to decide what they are willing to part with to make a trade rumor become reality. The Giants have been linked to players such as Milwaukee BrewersCorey Hart, Prince Fielder, Ryan Braun, Washington Nationals Josh Willingham, Kansas City Royals David DeJesus and Jose Guillen.
Here are the players stats heading into the All-Star Break.
When I asked the San Francisco Giants beat writer Chris Haft (via email) if the thinks the Giants are getting serious about trying to trade for Corey Hart, Prince Fielder or Ryan Braun. He told me it will take a lot to get one of those guys. The Brewers would want Matt Cain and somebody else decent, though the Giants might be able to sell them on Jonathan Sanchez.
Anthony Witrado of the Journal Sentinel said rumors have been flying regarding Hart for the last couple of weeks, and with the pitching-heavy but offense-starved Giants in town, the mill really got going with Hart-to-Giants talk.
I asked Witrado (via email) if he thinks the Giants will be able to land Hart, Fielder or Braun, and if so what does he think it would take to land one of them?
Witrado said Fielder and Braun are out of the question, most likely. Fielder would mean the Giants giving up Cain for sure. Hart is possibly, probably for Madison Bumgarner, but I don’t think that’ll happen over the next week. It will likely come after the break if it happens.
