Nick Cafardo of Boston.com says could he (Jason Bay) wind up in the City by the Bay? Giants GM Brian Sabean is looking for a big bat and will spend for someone like Bay or Matt Holliday. The Sox will have to extend themselves to sign Bay, who is going to draw a handsome amount in the free agent market. He would love to stay with the Sox, but he does live in Seattle, and the West Coast may be calling his name.

The Associated Press says Barry Bonds handed out T-shirts, posed for pictures and romped with young patients Friday as the UCSF Medical Center opened a playroom bearing his name.
The home run king said he hoped the Barry Bonds Family Foundation Playroom would provide children a place to relax while staying at the hospital.
Bonds paid about $250,000 for the renovation, according to Roxanne Fernandes, executive director of UCSF Children’s Hospital.
“He really has been a hero for us,” Fernandes said. “He kept saying, ‘I want to do more that will touch all these kids.’ We would tell him about various programs we had, and he walked by this room and said, ‘I want to make that playroom an amazing place for kids.’”

Priority No. 1 for the Giants this offseason: Find an impact hitter.
Priority No. 2: Find a guy who can hit.
Priority No. 3: You’ve figured it out by now, haven’t you?
Jonathan Sanchez frequently mentioned in trade rumors, likely will be subjected to them again as speculation arises regarding whether the Giants can swap pitching for hitting. Even Matt Cain, who ascended to All-Star status in 2009, probably will be mentioned as a bargaining chip should the Giants opt to make a blockbuster deal for a hitter.

“You might not have a choice,” he said, “I wouldn’t be the first in history.”
As the Giants scour the trade market for an impact hitter, Matt Cain’s name surely will be mentioned as bait.
General manager Brian Sabean continually has said, “Cain isn’t going anywhere,” but who knows whether some team might tempt Sabean with an offer he feels compelled to weigh (something like Alex Rios for Tim Lincecum, only better).
Before the final game Bob Howry left the team and flew home to Arizona for personal reasons. Joe Martinez also left the team. Martinez went to Arizona for instructional league.

Scott Ostler from the San Francisco Chronicle says on the Excitement Meter, Pablo Sandoval bumps the needle higher than any Giant since the young Barry Bonds. To find a Giant with Sandoval’s kid-like enthusiasm and joy for the game, say hey, you might have to go back to Willie Mays.
Good luck on the new diet, Panda. Mix in some bamboo shoots. But stay strong; you have a team to carry.

Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News says Reliver Justin Miller will have arthroscopic right elbow surgery Monday. Miller is eligible for arbitration, and even though he was valuable in a long relief role, the Giants might decline to tender him a contract.

John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle writes Jonathan Sanchez (8-12, 4.27 ERA) has a goal for 2010. “I want to win 15 to 20 games. I’ve got to go deeper into the game. I can’t go five innings.” Sanchez has been trade bait for offensive help, but he said, “I want to stay here. I came up with this team. They signed me. I belong here with the Giants
