The Giants are leaning towards activating Brian Wilson tomorrow from the DL. Andrew Baggarly says via twitter that he’s hearing there’s a chance Santiago Casilla goes on the DL. His elbow has been cranky, says Baggarly.
The Giants haven’t needed anyone to attempt to close a game so far this season. The only win the Giants had wasn’t a close game, so no closer was needed. Wilson is tied for first with Rod Beck as the Giants All-Time Saves Leader in a single season with 48 saves. Sure will be nice to know he’s available when needed!

Jeff Suppan has signed a minor league deal with the Kansas City Royals. Suppan was released by the Giants on March 29th. It was a mutual decision, as Suppan had an out clause if he did not make the Opening Day roster.
Bob Dutton of The Kansas City Star tells SF Giants Rumors that Suppan was signed as a deep fallback option. That could change, if he’s dominant in the PCL and a need arises. It’s a no-risk situation for the Royals. If Suppan pitches well, then great, he’s available if they need him. If he’s average, he fills out the AAA rotation as long as he’s needed and not blocking someone. If he’s terrible, they release him.
Triple-A Fresno Closer
Marc Kroon has decided to stay with the Giants organization and will start the season in Triple-A Fresno. He will be the Grizzlies closer, and has an out-clause in his contract that kicks in on June 1st. Kroon signed a minor league contract with the Giants on January 25, 2011.
Kroon pitched for 6 years in Japan, striking out 12.3 batters per 9.0 innings and recording 177 saves. Bruce Bochy was really happy that Kroon decided to stay with the Giants organization.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy thinks Barry Zito will be able to make his start on Sunday. If not, the Giants may place Zito on the DL and bring up Ryan Vogelsong from Fresno. It’s very doubtful that Madison Bumgarner would pitch on three days rest.
Staying Around Another Year
The Giants and infielder Freddy Sanchez agree on a one-year extension for $6 million. Which means Sanchez will be back in a Giants uniform in 2012. Sanchez has a lifetime .298 average in 9 Major League seasons.
Sloppy Defense
The Giants looked like they had their World Series hangover last night. It wasn’t the same focused Giants that we seen in last year’s Playoffs/World Series. Don’t get me wrong Clayton Kershaw was dealing last night, but when it came to the bottom of the 6th inning. They looked like the “Bad News Bears”. Miguel Tejada throws a ball away, and Buster Posey also does the same. It’s just pretty amazing after how bad the Giants played that they only gave up 2 runs, and lost 2-1.
One more thing that really stood out to me was when Mark DeRosa walked on four straight pitches to start the top of the 8th inning, and the next two pitches were also balls to Andres Torres. In my head I’m thinking okay this is definitely a red light. Let’s make Hong-Chih Kuo throw a strike. Sure enough on a pitch that was up and in, Torres was taking a hack. It just seemed like that helped Kuo find his rhythm, and maybe things would have turned out differently if Torres took the pitch. Oh well, it’s only one game. I guess we will just have to settle for a 161-1 record this season.
Was I the only one booing Juan Uribe last night?

The San Francisco Giants start their title defense today in Los Angeles against the hated Dodgers. Tim Lincecum is getting the Opening Day start (as if you thought anyone else was) against Clayton Kershaw. Today’s starting pitchers Lincecum and Kershaw will make a combined $14.5 million this season, and Lincecum will be making $14 million of that. Yes, that means the Dodgers haven’t had to shell out the big bucks for Kershaw as of yet. Both players were drafted in the 2006 MLB draft. Kershaw was drafted by the Dodgers at the number 7th overall pick, and Lincecum was the 10th player selected in the draft by the Giants.
2011 Opening Day Lineup
CF – Andres Torres
2B – Freddy Sanchez
RF – Aubrey Huff
C – Buster Posey
LF – Pat Burrell
SS – Miguel Tejada
1B – Brandon Belt
3B – Pablo Sandoval
P – Tim Lincecum
2010 Opening Day Lineup (what a difference a year makes)
CF – Aaron Rowand
SS – Edgar Renteria
3B – Pablo Sandoval
1B – Aubrey Huff
LF – Mark DeRosa
C – Bengie Molina
RF – John Bowker
2B – Juan Uribe
P – Tim Lincecum
Zito’s Car Accident
Barry Zito was in a car accident in Los Angeles last night. He was not seriously injured, but was taken to the hospital for some x-rays. He’s hoping to still be able to pitch Sunday in Los Angeles.
Wilson In LA For Opener
Brian Wilson is in Los Angeles with the team. He said he feels good after his bullpen session today. He thinks he will be ready to go after his next session facing hitters (Sunday). Wilson was throwing pretty hard per Giants beat writers.
Roster Moves
Steve Edlefsen, Ryan Rohlinger, Ryan Vogelsong and Chris Stewart were sent to Triple-A Fresno. Marc Kroon will talk to his family before making a decision about staying with the Giants organization and going to Fresno or possibly retiring.
Dan Runzler and Guillermo Mota will both start the season on the Opening Day roster to help solidify the bullpen.

Young phenom Brandon Belt has made the Opening Day Roster. Travis Ishikawa has been placed on waivers to make room for Belt. The Giants will have a nice bat added to their lineup with Belt playing first base. The Giants still have some decisions to make when Cody Ross is ready to come off the DL.
Do you think the Giants should release Aaron Rowand or Nate Schierholtz at that time if no trades are made by then? Maybe it’s time to just eat that contract and keep the left-handed bat (Schierholtz) coming off the bench.
