Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com tells SF Giants Rumors that he thinks Matt Cain got a great deal for himself (5/yr extension, $112.5 million on top of the $15 million he gets this year). Crasnick pointed out that Jered Weaver recently signed a 5-year, $85 million deal with the Angels.
“Cain probably could have gotten a 6 or even a 7 year deal on the open market. But when you look at the average annual value of the contract, that wasn’t much of a sacrifice on his part,” says Crasnick.
However, Crasnick does wonder about the long-term ramifications for Tim Lincecum and the team payroll.
He also brings up a very good question, and I will let you guys answer it! Be sure to leave a comment with your thoughts!
“How many contracts of this magnitude can they afford to give out?”

John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle says he spoke with Matt Cain‘s agent Rick Landrum, and he said “We’ll never give up hope.” Landrum is talking about the Opening Day deadline. Shea believes one or both sides could budge and a deal could be made as we get close to the April 6 opener.
With Tim Lincecum making $40.5 million over these next two years. Do you think Cain should expect to get $20 million a year, or demand more? Shea says, six years and at least $120 million wouldn’t seem out of the question.

The San Francisco Giants will have their first Cactus League game tomorrow (Saturday). Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle says Buster Posey will be held out of the first couple of Spring Training games. Posey hasn’t had any setbacks from his injury, but he also hasn’t tested his sliding and needs to work on running the bases.
There is no need to rush Posey. Let’s be sure he passes all the proper hurdles before he straps the gear on and becomes the Giants backstop. We just need him to be ready for the start of the 2012 season, because his bat was truly missed in 2011.
Twitter Nation
I’m sure some of you out there are really excited to hear that Tim Lincecum has joined the Twitter Nation (@TimLincecum).
What’s your thoughts on the Cactus League starting for the Giants tomorrow, Posey sitting out games and Lincecum joining the Twitter Nation?

Chris Haft of MLB.com says (via twitter) ace pitcher Tim Lincecum was playing catch today on flat ground with Barry Zito. That’s great news, because his back can’t be that stiff if he’s already back to throwing. It’s a minor injury, but with your ace pitcher, you can never be to careful.
Reporting date for position players is tomorrow(2/23) and the first full-squad workout is Friday (2/24). Now it’s starting to feel like it’s baseball season. It’s countdown time till the San Francisco Giants home Opening Day. I can taste the Garlic Fries already!

Alex Pavlovic of the San Jose Mercury News says number 3 prospect in the Giants organization (according to Baseball America) Heath Hembree was throwing bullets in his bullpen session.
For those of you that haven’t heard of Hembree. He’s a guy that you might want to keep an eye on. He went 1-0 with a 1.86 ERA in 53.1 innings between San Jose and Richmond. Did I forget to mention that he had 38 saves too?!?!
I’m not trying to start a controversy, but Hembree could be the Giants future closer. If Giants management decides they want to save money in the closer role, or if Brian Wilson has another arm injury. It could be an opportunity for Hembree to step in and show he can handle the closer role at a cheaper price.
With that said, let’s hope Wilson has a healthy 2012! He’s just an awesome dude, and fun to watch in a Giants uniform!
Side Note
Andrew Baggarly just reported that Tim Lincecum is listed as day-to-day with lower back stiffness.
What’s your thoughts on Hembree and Wilson?

Here are more nuggets from the sit down session with San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy and GM Brian Sabean at Giants Media Day. I had a chance to ask Bochy who would be plan B if closer Brian Wilson can’t go at the start of the season. Bochy said you can start with Sergio Romo and Javier Lopez. He also said everyone in the bullpen can move up a spot.
“It’s nice to have a luxury of having five or six guys who aren’t afraid to pitch in that ninth inning,” said Bochy.
Sabean also chimed in on their ace pitcher Tim Lincecum.
“Timmy likes San Francisco. He’s been treated very well here. He’s been compensated very well along the whole way. As it turns out, I think it was a win-win to get these two years out of the way. To kind of give us a base-line for how we can go forward,” said Sabean.
“Our budget can hold both Lincecum and Cain (Matt Cain), and try to get more offense in here,” said Sabean.
I asked Sabean if the Ryan Theriot signing means Brandon Crawford would be on a shorter leash.
“I don’t think so. We all want Crawford to be the shortstop going into Spring Training. No matter really what kind of Spring Training he has. We think he’s that talented with the glove,” said Sabean.

Chris Haft of MLB.com answers fans questions in his inbox article. Haft expects Matt Cain and the San Francisco Giants to reach a deal during Spring Training.
This would put a lot of Giants fans at ease since Tim Lincecum is in a two-year deal, and Giants fans wouldn’t be able to stomach the possibility of losing both pitchers to free agency. There is still two years to convince Lincecum that San Francisco is where he belongs.
When asked about Conor Gillaspie, Brett Pill and Justin Christian fighting for one of the last spots on the roster. Haft believes Pill has the best chance among this trio of making the club, because the Giants might need an extra right-handed bat.
Pill showed us his power last season, and it’s nice to have some pop coming off the bench. If he can show consistency at the plate, he could even force the issue that he should be getting some starts at first base. Let’s see if the 2010 version of Aubrey Huff shows up to Spring Training, cause that would guarantee Pill’s playing time will be off the bench.

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle says (via twitter) the San Francisco Giants and ace Tim Lincecum have agreed to a two-year deal, worth $40.5 million.
This means the Giants have bought out Lincecum’s two remaining arbitration years, and Lincecum is still eligible to be a free agent in 2014. Barry Zito is still the highest paid player on the 2012 roster. Lincecum gets a $500k bonus, $18 million in 2012 and $22 million in 2013.
Your thoughts on Lincecum signing the two year deal?

Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com says there is ten teams that have shown interest in Cuban pitcher Gerardo Concepcion. The Rangers, Yankees, Cubs and White Sox have expressed the most interest, but the San Francisco Giants have also been a team that have shown some interest. Concepcion’s agent says he has an offer on the table and is expected to sign a Major League contract within the next two weeks.
There hasn’t been any speculation that the Giants have made any contract offers, and I don’t see them making a run at him with ace Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain still on the front burner.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com says the San Francisco Giants made a $100 million offer to Tim Lincecum for fiver years. Lincecum rejected the offer, and the Giants are now focusing on a two-year or one-year deal.
The Giants and Lincecum don’t seem to be far apart on a one-year, or two-year deal. I don’t believe they will take this to an arbitration hearing. Some fans on SF Giants Rumors Facebook are saying Lincecum is being greedy, and other fans are saying just give him the salary he submitted for arbitration. They say just give him what he wants to keep him happy, and maybe that will keep him from bolting to New York when he’s a free agent.
Heyman also says baseball people believe Matt Cain might be able to match Cliff Lee‘s $120 million if he decides to test the free agent market. However, word on the street is that Cain really wants to stay in San Francisco. Which means he could just be asking the Giants to offer him a fair market deal, and they won’t have to try to outbid other teams to retain Cain’s services.
What’s your thoughts on Lincecum and Cain being long term Giants?
